Mail to the British Empire: North America, Canada 1864/71: 1 d. vermilion, 2 d. pale blue, Plate I, two worn examples and 6 d. red-brown, all perf. 12½, used on 1866 single rate cover from Greytown to Orillia,
Canada West endorsed "via England", but carried on the Trans-Pacfic route on the "Kaikoura" from Wellington (June 24) to Panama (July 20) and St. Thomas (July 29), the adhesives all tied by "4" numeral obliterators in black. The
cover entered Canada via the United States and was marked "10" (cents) in manuscript for the cross-border rate and a further "5" for the Canadian internal rate as the 11 d. fee paid was only for pre-payment to the first border.
Reverse with "W3" cds (Greytown) dated May 24, Wellington cds (May 25), Montreal (Aug 1 4) and Orillia (Aug 15) arrival cds. Torn on opening at top affecting one 2 d. adhesive and the 1 d. restored but a rare and most appealing cover. Note: Letter rate for Canada via Suez and the UK (from June 4, 1863 until Jan 11, 1867 was 11 d. per ½ ounce, 1/10 d. per ounce, 3/8 d. for each additional fraction of an ounce. The Pacific rate via Panama at this date was 1
