Town, Cape of Good Hope lightly tied by Wellington numeral
obliterator in black. Reverse with Wellington cds (May 22) and
large oval "CAPE TOWN" datestamp struck in red (Oct 1) on arrival.
A very rare and extremely early usage of a Chalon to Southern
Africa. Cert. RPSL (2024). Note 1: Carried on P&O "Bombay" from
Sydney, the "Colombo" from Galle and the "Pera" from Alexandria to
Southampton. Note 2: The letter written and signed by by Sir George
Grey (1812-1898) whose illustrious career included posts as
Governor of South Australia (1841-1845), Governor of New Zealand
(1845-1854), Governor of Cape Colony (1854-1851), Governor of New

red-brown, perf. 12½, a single and horizontal pair used on 1870
single rate cover from Dunedin to the Lovedale Missionary
Institution in Cape Province endorsed "via London", all tied by
"Dunedin / 0" duplex (Sept 1) in black. 'London / Paid' transit cds
in red (Oct 25) and "CAPE TOWN / CAPE COLONY" arrival cds (Nov 30)
in black. Carried on the "City of Melbourne" leaving Auckland on
the 1st Contract Pacific route via Honolulu, San Francisco and
thence via London - Shipping records list the letter has travelling
on the Union Line steamer "Briton" from Southampton to the Cape. A
very rare destination (only three Chalon head covers are recorded
to the Cape, this collection contains two) and a most attractive
cover. Note 1: Journey time 91 days. Note 2: The addressee, the
Reverend James Stewart was the newly appointed head of the Lovedale
Misasion in the Eastern Cape Province. During the 1860's he
explored the Zambezi River region, at times in the company of David

showing "London / Paid" transit cds in red (Aug 21) alongside
handstruck "1d." credit marking in red (credit to Canada) and
manuscript "5" pence credit in red crayon for Great Britain.
Reverse with Nova Scotia arrival cds (Sept 14). A rare franking and
a most unusual destination. Note 1: The single rate to the Maritime
Provinces was 11 d. under ½ ounce. Note 2: Carried on P&O
"Northam" from Sydney (June 22), the "Nemesis" from Galle, and the

vermilion, 2 d. pale blue, Plate I, two worn examples and 6 d.
red-brown, all perf. 12½, used on 1866 single rate cover from
Greytown to Orillia, Canada West endorsed "via England", but
carried on the Trans-Pacfic route on the "Kaikoura" from Wellington
(June 24) to Panama (July 20) and St. Thomas (July 29), the
adhesives all tied by "4" numeral obliterators in black. The cover
entered Canada via the United States and was marked "10" (cents) in
manuscript for the cross-border rate and a further "5" for the
Canadian internal rate as the 11 d. fee paid was only for
pre-payment to the first border. Reverse with "W3" cds (Greytown)
dated May 24, Wellington cds (May 25), Montreal (Aug 1 4) and
Orillia (Aug 15) arrival cds. Torn on opening at top affecting one
2 d. adhesive and the 1 d. restored but a rare and most appealing
cover. Note: Letter rate for Canada via Suez and the UK (from June
4, 1863 until Jan 11, 1867 was 11 d. per ½ ounce, 1/10 d. per
ounce, 3/8 d. for each additional fraction of an ounce. The Pacific
rate via Panama at this date was 1 s. but the cover remained
untaxed due to its endorsement. Provenance: Collection John Woolfe,

Dunedin cds (March 27), Hamilton cds (June 29) and Hawkesbury
arrival (June 30). Overpaid 1 d. for rate to Canada, with
manuscript "1d." due to Great Britain and "5" cents due for
Canadian internal postage. Small imperfections but a scarce cover.
Note: Carried on P&O "Madras" from Sydney, the "Simla" from
Galle and the "Nyanza" from Alexandria to Southampton. Probably
