6 d. red-brown, perf. 12½, a single example used on 1866 cover from
Timaru to care of Brisbane Post Office, Queensland tied by numeral
"5" obliterator of Timaru. Reverse with Timaru cds (July 2),
Dunedin cds (July 3), Ship Letter Sydney (Aug 4) and Ship Letter
Queensland (July 31) all in black. On arrival in Brisbane the cover
was held for a month nd readdressed back (Aug 31) to Sydney Post
Office with manuscript "6d." for the redirection fee. Rare - very
few Chalon head covers are recorded to Queensland - Woolfe's
example (lot 181, from the same correspondence) was stated to be

all round in a bright shade, used on 1867 single rate cover from
Christchurch to Melbourne, Victoria locally readdressed upon
arrival, tied by "C" obliterators in black. Christchurch despatch
cds (Dec 13) on obverse and Melbourne (Dec 30) and Newbridge
arrival cds (Dec 31); redirected back to Melbourne (Jan 1, 1868).
Flap tear but a most attractive and extremely rare cover.

to Launceston, Tasmania neatly tied by "Auckland / 1" duplex (Nov
15). Underpaid by 1 d. and struck with two line manuscript filled
"DETAINED FOR - 1 / ADDITIONAL POSTAGE" in black and Chalon 1 d.
pale brown applied over the instructional marking and cancelled on
the following day. Reverse with diamond framed "SHIP LETTER INWARDS
FREE" datestamp (Dec 4) in red. A most appealing and rare cover.
Note: Post Office regulation 31, noted on July 1 1871, stated that
all mail was to be forwarded as long as the single rate had been
paid. Should the Postmaster know the sender of underpaid mail, the
"DETAINED" handstamp could be used and the cover retained until
fully paid prior to sending. Provenance: Collection Len Jury,

5019 cover imageMail to the British Empire: Australian States, Western Australia
1871/73: 1 d. brown and 2 d. orange, perf. 12½, used on 1874 single
rate cover from Napier to Fremantle, Western Australia endorsed
"Immediate", overpaid 1 d. for the newly introduced reduced rate,
tied by numeral "11" obliterators in black with superb strike of
straight line "TOO LATE" adjacent in black. Reverse with Napier cds
(Feb 4) and Wellington transit cds (Feb 8). The envelope flap and
left edge restored but a magnificent and rare cover: believed to be
the sole recorded Chalon cover to Western Australia. Note 1: The
addressee was Lionel Helyar Gould who arrived in Fremantle in 1871.
The letter is sent care of Reverend George Bostock, the Anglican
chaplain at Fremantle. Note 2: Despite the fact the "Too Late"
handstamp was applied to avoid criticism of the Post Office, it was
rarely used. Provenance: Collection Gerald Elliott; Collection John

6,1852 from Russell to Sydney prepaid with extremely rare "♚ / PAID
AT / RUSSELL NEW ZEALAND" in red and "AUCKLAND / NEW ZEALAND" cds
adjacent (April 17) in black rated "2d." prepaid in red manuscript
and charged "3" (pence) due on arrival; backstamped "Russell / New
Zealand" cds and "Ship Letter / ♚ / Sydney" datestamp (May 11). A

4). Manuscript "To Be Called For" and "8d." at left for the amount
to collected upon delivery. The adhesives with staining reduced but
