4991 cover imageP&O via Suez - Overpaid Rate to United Kingdom 1873 (June 2):
Overpaid cover from Otago to London incorrectly prepaid 8 d. with
1864/71 2 d. vermilion and 6 d. blue tied by Otago "O" obliterator.
Reverse with Dunedin despatch cds (June 2). Fault to the 2 d.
adhesive but very rare - the Post Office notice in the "Timaru
Herald" erroneously broadcast a ½ ounce rate via Southampton at 8
d. on May 22, 23 and 26, 1873 editions stating the mail would leave
on June 1; a retraction was printed five days later in the same
Newspaper. However the sender of this cover evidently mailed the
item during the five day period prior to the retraction. (Image 1) (Image 2)

blue, a single example and a fine horizontal strip of four used on
1866 cover from Christchurch to Hull endorsed "via Marseilles" and
rated 10 d. for this purpose; all tied by "C" obliterators of
Christchurch in black. Despite the routing endorsement, the cover
was instead mailed from Christchurch (Oct 5), via Lyttleton (Oct
7), Panama and St. Thomas to Southampton (Dec 1) and Hull (Dec 2).
A scarce and most attractive cover - the "S.S. Seine" was
quarantined on arrival due to a Yellow Fever outbreak on board.

red-brown perf. 12½, a single example used on 1866 cover from
Nelson to London endorsed "via Panama" and carried on the
S.S."Rakaia" from Wellington to Panama (Dec 8), pre-paying 6 d. and
underpaid 6 d. (the 2 d. due for Nelson to Wellington appears to
have been omitted), struck with "INSUFFICIENTLY STAMPED 6 / FINE -"
and initially found to be "1/4 d." to be paid on delivery in the
United Kingdom. This amount reduced with 1 shilling to pay on
arrival in Southampton (Feb 1, 1866). An appealing cover carried on
the 6th voyage via the Pacific Mail route. Edge wear but a fine and
rare cover. (Image 1) (Image 2)
