Liverpool from Corporal John Thomas of the 2/14th Regiment,
countersigned by his Commanding Officer at left, tied by numeral
"8" obliterator. Reverse with "WANGANUI" despatch cds (Nov 8). Part
back flap missing and overall soiling as to be expected, but a rare
usage during the 1864-1866 Third Period of the 'Maori Wars': this
cover being mailed during the Hau Hau conflict in the Taranaki

handstamp in black signifying the letter was received after the
Mails had closed. London arrival cds (Dec 19) on reverse of a fine
and attractive cover. Note 1: Journey time of 90 days - thus the
cover was presumably added to the Mailbag in time. Note 2: Carried

Supplementary Mail coastal steamer to Melbourne, the "Bombay" to
Galle, "Surat" to Suez and the "Bangalore" from Alexandria to
Southampton. London cds in red on obverse (April 25). Closed
envelope tear but an extremely rare surviving example of this

applied at the Foreign Branch in Dunedin at left with docket number
"65" inserted. Reverse with "Port Chalmers / Orago NZ" cds (June 9)
and Glasgow arrival cds (Aug 13). Postage 6 d. for under ½ ounce
and 1 s. for registration. Minor imperfection to top of envelope
but a fine and rare cover. Note 1: Journey time 66 days. Carried on

d. pale yellow and 1867 6 d. red-brown, perf. 12½ used on 1870
cover from Dunedin to Bolton le Moors, endorsed "via Suez &
Marseilles", tied by Dunedin duplexes (Oct 7) in black. Due to the
Franco-Prussian War the cover sent via Brindisi instead and struck
with superb framed "INSUFFICIENTLY PAID / FOR BRINDISI ROUTE /
DEFICIENT POSTAGE / 3d." handstamp in black. The Brindisi route was
3 d. more expensive than the closed via Marseilles route. Reverse
with Bolton arrival cds (Dec 26). Staining to envelope but a
magnificent and most attractive cover of great rarity - just two
examples of this handstamp are known on New Zealand Mail. Cert.
RPSL (2006). Note 1: Journey time 81 days. Carried on P&O
"Geelong" from Sydney, the "Mooltan" from Galle and the A & O Line
"P. Tomaso" from Alexandria to Brindisi (Nov 23). Note 2: This
cover is illustrated in Bob Odenweller's "Postage Stamps of New
Zealand" on pages 148 and 256. The only other NZ example was in the
Benvie collection (lot 44) and later in the Greg Francis collection
(lot 1372). Provenance: Collection John Woolfe, Spink, London, 3
Oct 2006, lot 354; collection Joseph Hackmey, Spink Shreves, New

small fault, used on single rate cover from Wanganui to Beverley,
Yorkshire tied by "8" numeral obliterators in black. Reverse with
"Wanganui" cds (Feb 24), Wellington cds (Feb 26) and Beverley
arrival (May 16). Opening tear at top left but an unusual make up
of the 10 d. rate and an attractive cover. Opinion Holcombe (1992).
Note 1: Journey time 121 days. Carried on the P&O "Avoca" from
Sydney, the "Candia" from Galle and the "Tanjore" from Alexandria

Manchester, endorsed "via Suez" and tied in black with "Dunedin"
duplex (Dec 28). Carried on the Brindisi route but the cover
remained untaxed. Reverse with Manchester arrival cds (March 16,
1873). Scarce cover. Note 1: The cover was underpaid 2 d. for the
double rate of 1/8 d. per ounce via Brindisi. The cover travelled
via Brindisi as the Southampton mails were not landed until March
