4953 cover imageEnglish Mails via Australian & European Line - Wreck Mail 1857:
Imperforate 2 d. blue, a strip of three with margins touched to
fine, on July 21, 1857 cover from Otago to Haddington, Scotland
tied by "18" numeral obliterators in black. London arrival (Nov 19)
in red at right and reverse with "OTAGO / NEW ZEALAND" cds (July
21) and Haddington arrival cds (Nov 29) after a journey of 132 days
- this was due to the cover being carried on the Australian &
European chartered vessel "Emeu" departing Sydney (Sept 11) calling
at Melbourne en route to Suez; she ran aground near Jeddah (Saudi
Arabia) in the Red Sea on October 22. The mails were retrieved from
the grounded vessel and taken to Suez for onwards transmission. The
ship undertook temporary repairs before being freed from the reef
and sailed for Suez for further repairs. Minor flap and edge faults
but very rare. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

rare example of an 'Ambulance' envelope from this wreck where the
salvaged letter was probably too damp to be forwarded other than as
