4927 cover image1840-1856 Great Britain Mails 1844 (April 18): Prepaid entire from
Paihia, Bay of Islands to the Church Mission Society in London,
mailed with "♚ / KORORARIKA / 1840 / NEW ZEALAND" oval handstamp on
reverse and rated "4d." in manuscript, overstruck by straight line
"SHIP LETTER" in black applied in London with arrival cds in red
(Sept 14), charged "8d." for an incoming Ship Letter on arrival. A
fair strike of a scarce handstamp. Note 1: Journey time 139 days.
Note 2: The "♚ / KORORARIKA / 1840 / NEW ZEALAND" oval handstamp
was ordered from the GPO in Sydney. The year date, 1840, was fixed
and remained unaltered throughout its period of use from March
15,1841 until August 20,1844. Note 3: 4 d. per ½ ounce Ship Letter,
lowered rate introduced on September 6, 1843 applicable until March

4931 cover image1840-1856 Great Britain Mails 1845 (Oct 20): Prepaid entire letter
from River Hutt to Edgbaston, Birmingham rated "8d." in red
manuscript with framed "PAID AT / WELLINGTON" handstamp in red,
struck on reverse with straight line "SHIP LETTER" in black applied
in London and Birmingham arrival cds (Jan 27, 1845) and charged
"8d." due in manuscript for an incoming Ship Letter. Scarce cover
with interesting contents the Maori Land War. Note 1: Journey time
100 days. Note 2: The writer reports on preparations being made to
protect the settlers in Hutt Valley north of Wellington due to
Maori tribes attacking the settlement "since the fight in the Bay
of Islands, fortifications have been erected and the settlers
drilled and there are three Men of War and seven hundred soldiers
in the North Island. There has been a strong stockade built in the
Hutt, with fifty soldiers there including big guns at each corner,

letter from Wahapu near Russell to Stamford, Lincolnshire endorsed
from "Corporal John Mitchell, 58th (Rutlandshire) Regiment, Wahapu,
New Zealand" at top, further endorsed "Paid" and countersigned by
Commanding Officer, Majot Bridge, at left, struck with framed "PAID
AT / AUCKLAND" in red with manuscript "1d." in red and London
transit cds (April 2) and Stamford arrival in blue of the same day.
Reverse showing "NEW ZEALAND" cds (Oct 19) well struck in black.
Generally fine but for slight soiling and weak folds but a very
rare entire with fascinating content from the First Maori Land War.
Note 1: Journey time 175 days. Note 2: Content "many of our brave
comrades fell gloriously in the field...I expect we will be sent
round to...Port Nicholson. We have not laid in a bed since we came
to the country....proud to have it to say that they have the best
praise of any corps on the island. News has just arrived that the
enemy has taken a circuitous route to attack our Detachment...there
is two Ships of War come to our assistance...so good bye I must get

and truly superb strike of the rare circular "SOLDIERS & SEAMENS /
BY SHIP / 4" (pence) handstamp in black. Reverse showing "Auckland"
cds with London transit cds (Feb 8, 1849) and Dundee cds. A fine
and extremely rare entire. Note: Journey time 124 days. The 58th
Regiment of Foot left New Zealand some ten years after this cover
was mailed. Over 300 Officers and men elected to remain as settlers

black (Feb 16) alongside manuscript "P.O. Otago 11-2-52". London

The cover exhibits the earliest recorded usage of the "♚ / PAID AT
/ OTAGO NEW ZEALAND" and the latest recorded "P.O. Otago"
manuscript date usage. Rare Gi CC4 = £ 1'900. Note: Journey time
159 days. The newly introduced "Otago" datestamp was manufactured

13) on board Australian RMSNC "Melbourne" arriving in England (July

homebound voyages were undertaken under this packet mail contract
between Australian Royal Mail Steamship Company and the Admiralty
in June 1852, the trips were made between September 1852 and

Onehunga to Glasgow endorsed with handstruck "2" in red and fair
strike of circular "♚ / PAID AT / AUCKLAND NEW ZEALAND" handstamp
in red. The cover travelled via Melbourne leaving on July 22, 1854
on board the "Queen of the South" for Southampton via Cape Horn and
St. Vincent. Reverse with "Auckland / New Zealand" despatch cds
(June 16) in black, London cds in red and Glasgow arrival in black
(Oct 14) where rated at "1s." to pay in manuscript. On arrival in
Britain the "Queen of the South" was commandered by the Royal Navy
for Crimean War duties. Note: Journey time 105 days. The "Queen of
the South" was a General Steamship Line vessel performing under the
Packet Mail contract of May 1853 until June 1855. The contract
contained a number of unusual features: ships had to depart
Southampton for Melbourne and could proceed back either via the
Cape of Good Hope or via Cape Horn - on this last route the Mails

departing on the Black Ball line steamer "Lightning" on April 11,
struck with straight line "SHIP LETTER" in black on arrival (June
29, 1855) with London cds (July 4) and rated "8d." to pay. A scarce
entire Gi CC6 = £ 1'200. Note: Journey time 79 days. The Melbourne
Argus reported that the "Lightning" was carrying 23,037 letters,
66'693 ounces of gold and 276 passengers on this voyage. For

Black Ball line clipper "Lightning" on December 27 via Cape Horn
for Liverpool with "AUSTRALIAN PACKET / LIVERPOOL" cds (March 24,
1856) and rated with handstruck "d6" to pay. A scarce entire Gi CC1
= £ 400. Note: Journey time 107 days, Melbourne to Cork 88 days.
The "Lightning" was carrying gold (11'630 ounces) and the Mails but
no passengers due to damage to her bow that could not be repaired
adequately in Melbourne. Becalmed off Ireland some mails were
landed at Crookhaven by the Cork pilot boat, whilst most were
