4915 cover imagePrior to 1840 the Post Office in the Colony of New Zealand was not
an organised concern and the writers of letters had to make their
own arrangements with visiting ship's masters or passengers to get
their mail delivered or posted at a port of call. Thus, prior to
1840, there were no New Zealand postal charges. Missionary Mail
1830 (March 8): Entire letter from Reverend J. Stack in Mangungu,
Hokianga Harbour to the Wesleyan Missionary Society in London,
endorsed internally "By a Whaler on the eve of sailing for
England", presumably forwarded in Sydney with "Forw'd by your
obedient servant, Campbell & Co." in manuscript with "INDIA LETTER
/ DEAL" struck in black on reverse (Robertson fig. In3) with London
arrival cds in red (Dec 14, 1830) and charged due at 1 s. to pay in
manuscript (4 d. for an incoming Ship Letter + 8 d. from Deal to
London). A rare and very early entire. Note: Journey time of 282
days, some 9 months in transit. It is interesting to note from the
very readable contents that the writer requests an answer via a
Whaler as "it is unadvisable for a letter to come through the Post
Office by way of New South Wales...". Provenance: Collection John
Wolfe, Spink, London, 3 Oct 2006, lot 5. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

4916 cover imageMissionary Mail 1833 (Jan 24): Entire letter from Reverend J. Hobbs
in Mangungu, Hokianga Harbour to the Wesleyan Missionary Society in
London, endorsed internally as entrusted to Capt. Druce of the
sailing ship "Sisters" which departed from Hokianga for London via
Cape Horn on January 26, 1833. The entire struck on arrival
initially treated as Ship Letter with framed "RAMSGATE / SHIP
LETTER" in black (Robertson fig. S3) and altered by "INDIA LETTER /
RAMSGATE" struck over the error and again at left with "INDIA
LETTER / RAMSGATE" in black (Robertson fig. In3), with London cds
(April 27, 1833) of arrival in red. Charged due at 1 s. to pay in
manuscript (4 d. for an incoming Ship Letter + 8 d. from Ramsgate
to London). A fine and unusual entire. Note: Journey time of 91
days. Fine readable contents "it is gratifying for the Christian
public to know that such is the wish of the Natives to learn to
read, that on occasion they have brought Pigs, which would weigh
from 50 to 100 lbs. and offered them as payment for a book...". The
writer had just been appointed as a Missionary to Tonga, which post
he had accepted. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

4918 cover image1840-1856 Great Britain Mails 1840 (Dec 6): Cover from Port
Nicholson (now Wellington) to London endorsed "per Morley via
Sydney" carried by Ship's captain to Sydney where mailed by the
Captain with "3" (pence) paid in red manuscript and struck with
oval "PAID SHIP LETTER / ♚ / SYDNEY" in red (Dec 20). The cover
carried on the "Hebe" arriving off Portsmouth on May 18, 1841,
thence to London with straight line "SHIP LETTER" in black and
arrival cds (May 19, 1841) in red and rated "1/4 d." due to pay in
manuscript (incoming Ship Letter of over ½ an ounce). A fine and
most attractive cover Note 1: The "Morley" was a 578 ton sailing
ship under the command of Capt. Stevens; the "Hebe" was a 189 ton
brig. Journey time 163 days. Note 2: No evidence of internal rate
paid even though the Nicholson Post Office had opened on June 4,
1840. Note 3: The writer, Thomas Partridge had arrived in
Wellington in March 1840, setting up as a storekeeper in what is
now Manners Street. He later became a member of the first
Provisional Constitution Meeting chaired by Colnel William
Wakefield. (Image 1) (Image 2)

framed "LIVERPOOL / SHIP" datestamp of transit (Dec 11, 1842) with
further "8" pence due upon arrival. Note 1: Journey time 200 days.
Note 2: It should be noted that prior to 1856 most of the mail

with only a small proportion transported via the Australian Packet
services, which were arranged for the Australian colonies only and
made no provision for mail to and from New Zealand. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

with 1841 2 d. blue, plate 3, lettered KL, three margins, tied by
Maltese Cross in black with faint "Fleet St. E" despatch adjacent.
Reverse with London arrival (Dec 14, 1843). The heavy letter weighs
nearly 3 ounces, mailed in this fashion the writer saved an
astonishing sum of 2 shillings and 10 d. in postage (New Zealand
rate of 6 d. per ½ ounce, less the 2 d. paid on arrival). Faults to
the adhesive but a rare and most unusual entire. Note 1: Journey
time of 136 days. Note 2: New Zealand ship letter rate to Great
Britain from 1 March 1842 until 5 September 1843 was 6 d. per ½
ounce. (Image 1) (Image 2)

Hawkshead River, Hutt to Edgbaston, Birmingham via Sydney endorsed
"Single Paid" at top, reverse with light strike of large oval
"WELLINGTON / NEW ZEALAND" (Sept 1843) in black, with straight line
"SHIP LETTER" in black and London transit cds (Jan 29, 1844) and
Birmingham cds of the same day. Rated "8d." due for an incoming
Ship Letter in manuscript. Note 1: Journey time 168 days.
Fascinating contents regarding the "Wairau Massacre" of June 17,
1843 regarding the "Land Wars" between the Maori and British
settlers, this being the first serious clash of arms since the 1840
Treaty of Waitangi. The incident started when a magistrate and a
surveyor presented a possibly fraudulent claim to land in the
Wairau Valley in the north of the South Island - all told 22
British soldiers were killed with four Maori deaths including the
wives of two Maori chiefs; "conflict over rural land in the Wairau
River area, between natives under Chiefs Rangihaeata and Te
Rauparaha and the British party of surveyors from Nelson. It
resulted in the massacre and mutilation of nineteen British, among
them Capt. Arthur Wakefield...Three more British were missing".
