23 in combination with 2 d. dark grey-blue, Plate II position 22,
early impression, each of good colour, with good to large margins
and tied by mute obliterators in black, used on an envelope from
New South Wales to Birmingham, England, dated 30 November 1850,
endorsed "Per Maria Steamer". Smudged 'Paid Ship Letter / Crown /
Sydney' in red at right (NO 30) and manuscript '2/2.'. Reverse with
London cds in red (MY 19 1851) and Birmingham arrival (MY 20 1851)
in blue. Vertical filing fold left side of envelope well clear of
adhesives, small tear in left side of envelope and usual wear and
aging. Owners mark to reverse. A fine and rare entire. Provenance:

4405 cover image1854/59: Garter 6 d. olive-grey, imperforate, fresh colour, four
good to large margins all round, used on a cover from Sydney to
Enfield, London, dated 14 June 1859, tied by NSW ringed oval in
black with LONDON PAID Paid arrive alongside (AU 9), despatch to
reverse SYDNEY NEW SOUTH WALES - JU14 1859 together with arrival
cds LONDON-N (AU 9). Sent overseas mail per the P&O Steam
Navigation Co., carried on the first voyage of the new P&O
contract per ship “Benares”, sailing 14 June 1859 and routed via
Southampton, rated 6 d. per ½ oz. The envelope with almost complete
backflap. Minor edge wear and some ageing consistent with postal
use, but a fine and attractive early intercontinental envelope,
illustrating the first P&O contract sailing from Sydney to
