altered late in 1860 when the internal Postage Due was dropped
after the Governor received confirmation from London. (Image 1) (Image 2)

1876 cover to Wales and tied by "B53" obliterators in black.
Reverse with Mauritius cds of despatch (Aug 17) in blue and
Fishguard arrival cds (Sept 5) in black. Faults to adhesives and
envelope however a very rare cover mailed when the rates of postage
were unclear to the sender and possibly even the P.O. due to the
constant changes made during 1876 - see below. Sold together with
an April 1877 piece bearing ½ d. on 10 d. maroon, 1863/72 2 d. blue
and 4 d. rose tied by "B53" obliterators, dated 26 April 1877.
Rate: 1 Jan 1876, France joined the UPU. Rates to Réunion were
lowered to the equivalent of 6½ d. Britain at this date was
charging 10 d. per ½ ounce for a letter to nearby Mauritius. This
was an anomaly and therefore the GB-Mauritius rate was lowered to
6½ d. on 10 Jan 1876 and reduced again to 6 d. in 1 July 1876 when
the French Colonies joined the UPU - this being the normal sea rate
to many British Colonies. However the 6½ d. rate from Mauritius to
Britain was only reduced when Mauritius joined the UPU on 1st April
1877. (Image 1) (Image 2)
