despatch cds in black, landed at Cove with framed "INDIA LETTER /
COVE" in black (Robertson fig. In.1) and COVE cds adjacent (April
8, 1845). Rated "8d." in manuscript for an incoming Ship letter
with framed "COLONIES / & ART. 12" applied in London in red and
thence via Boulogne to Bordeaux where charged "25" décimes due on

4877 cover image1849 (March 1): Entire letter from Port Louis to Savane struck with
very fine framed "PAID" handstamp in black (Proud fig. PD3) with
framed "INLAND" alongside and "Mauritius / Post Office" despatch
cds on reverse. Manuscript notation "Paid 2d." but altered to "4"
below the "Paid" notation; reverse with "Recommandée à s'obligance
de Monsieur Faique pr. être acheminée le plus tôt possible" in
manuscript and signed by A. Pipon; Mr. Faique being the Postmaster
at Souillac. Sensible slight repair due to acid ink but rare. (Image 1) (Image 2)

4878 cover image1850 (Nov 20): Entire letter from Bordeaux to Port Louis, Mauritius
endorsed "Par Suez y Ceylon" with Bordeaux despatch cds and framed
"P.P." in red, and marked "4" (grams) within sender's cachet,
carried on the "Medina" to Alexandria, and P&O steamer
"Hindostan" from Suez to Galle, thence on the "Elizabeth" and
struck on arrival with oval framed "PACKET LETTER / MAURITIUS" (Jan
16, 1851) and "Foreign Letter" both in red and charged "2s." due on
delivery. Scarce - the "Foreign Letter" handstamp is only recorded
used betwween Nov 1850 until July 1851, this being the sole example

4879 cover image1851 (March 10): Entire letter from Mahebourg to Braintree, Essex
endorsed "By Overland via Ceylon", the letter mentions enclosures;
struck with fine strikes of framed "PAID" and "MAHEBOURG" datestamp
of despatch (with manuscript date), both fine in blue (Proud figs.
D1, PD1). Rated initially alongside the "Paid" handstamp at
"2/4d.", the letter was erroneously charged upon receipt (May 19)
at "2/3d." - the rate for under ½ ounce. Altered in mansucript to
"2/11d." for the under ¾ ounce rate via Marseilles. Fine strikes of

MAURITIUS / GPO" cds (July 9) in black. Scarce and fine entire

comprising 1 d. and 2 d. in blue and 1 d. and 2 d. in orange-red,
printed from the original plates rediscovered in 1912, each on
ungummed thin paper, inset. Fresh colours and fine impressions,
slight aging. An attractive and historic reproduction of the famous

horizontal pair with aample to large margins all round, positions
1-2 on the sheet of 12 subjects, used on 1857 cover to Port Louis
cancelled by "16" numeral within two circles handstamps in black
with octagonal framed "Eastern Suburb / FE 6 1857" despatch
datestamp in black alongside. "♚ / MAURITIUS / GPO" arrival cds
(Feb 7) at right. No side flaps but a rare and most attractive
local usage. Note: For the only other similar cover of this usage
see the Hiroyuki Kanai collection, DF, Zurich, 3 Nov 1993, lot 97.

a fine used example, position 10 on the sheet of twelve subjects,
on 1859 cover to Camp Malabar on the outskirts of Port Louis,
cancelled by light strike of void obliterator in black. Superb
strike of framed "PENNY POST" in black at top and reverse with
"G.P.O. / MAURITIUS" cds (May 16) in black and Postman's manuscript
notations alongside "Not in, 18-5-59" and "Not in, 19 May 59". File
fold well away from the fine adhesive, a rare and attractive cover.

(April 6) in black (Proud D3, the earliest recorded date of use by
over two years), and Mauritius transit cds, struck in Port Louis
with oval "INSUFFICIENTLY / PREPAID" in red (whilst 10 d. was the
correct rate to France, the sender had omitted to pay the
contentious 2 d. island fee). Handstruck "18" décimes due upon
delivery in black. Some faults due to acid ink but a remarkable and
