very fine framed "PAID" handstamp in black (Proud fig. PD3) with
framed "INLAND" alongside and "Mauritius / Post Office" despatch
cds on reverse. Manuscript notation "Paid 2d." but altered to "4"
below the "Paid" notation; reverse with "Recommandée à s'obligance
de Monsieur Faique pr. être acheminée le plus tôt possible" in
manuscript and signed by A. Pipon; Mr. Faique being the Postmaster

4878 cover image1850 (Nov 20): Entire letter from Bordeaux to Port Louis, Mauritius
endorsed "Par Suez y Ceylon" with Bordeaux despatch cds and framed
"P.P." in red, and marked "4" (grams) within sender's cachet,
carried on the "Medina" to Alexandria, and P&O steamer
"Hindostan" from Suez to Galle, thence on the "Elizabeth" and
struck on arrival with oval framed "PACKET LETTER / MAURITIUS" (Jan
16, 1851) and "Foreign Letter" both in red and charged "2s." due on
delivery. Scarce - the "Foreign Letter" handstamp is only recorded
used betwween Nov 1850 until July 1851, this being the sole example

4879 cover image1851 (March 10): Entire letter from Mahebourg to Braintree, Essex
endorsed "By Overland via Ceylon", the letter mentions enclosures;
struck with fine strikes of framed "PAID" and "MAHEBOURG" datestamp
of despatch (with manuscript date), both fine in blue (Proud figs.
D1, PD1). Rated initially alongside the "Paid" handstamp at
"2/4d.", the letter was erroneously charged upon receipt (May 19)
at "2/3d." - the rate for under ½ ounce. Altered in mansucript to
"2/11d." for the under ¾ ounce rate via Marseilles. Fine strikes of

(Feb 7) at right. No side flaps but a rare and most attractive

fold well away from the fine adhesive, a rare and attractive cover.
