Lot Symbol Lot Description CV or Estimate
106 cover image1812 (July 16): Military despatch cover from General Amar Singh
Thapa, Governor and Commander of the Western Provinces, with his
square black seal superbly struck with manuscript date "4th Saun
1869 BS = Thursday 16 July 1812" addressed to General Bhimsen Thapa
at the Royal Palace in Kathmandu, and the letter reads "Ask HQ for
permission to order a night march of one platoon of Gorkha soldiers
from Jumla to the forward Army base". The Jumla referred to is not
the Nepalese town but military parlance for a known position
without mentioining a name. The cover was from the western theatre
of the war, with skirmishes around Dehra Dun and Almora and shows
how sensitive General Bhimsen was not to antagonise the East India
company forces in that he sought persmission to move about 15 men
forward. Rare. Note: Bhimsen Thapa (1775-1839), was Prime Minister
of Nepal when the British East India Company invaded Nepal in 1814.
Eventually subdued with heavy losses by the British, the Gorkha
forces have fought alongside the British Army ever since. Bhimsen
Thapa committed suicide whilst under arrest in British custody in
1839. (Image 1) (Image 2)
