1481 cover image1895-1896 Second French Protectorate 1896: Surcharged 5 c. on 1 c.
black on azure, a used example on 1896 Newspaper wrapper to
Wellingborough, England tied by shortened "TRESOR ET POSTES AUX
ARMEES 1 / MADAGASCAR" cds (April 11) in black with information
strike alongside at left. The adhesive damaged upon opening but
largely intact, with perthaps just three such examples known (one
other cover being lot 40258 in the Behr / Rousso sale which was
described as unique, both are addressed to B.C. Jukes in
Wellingborough). Very rare. Note: The 1896 surcharged 'Ellipse'
issue was ordered when stamps ran out in early 1896. On March 5, a
decree ordered a small quantity of the remaining stamps to be
surcharged; these surcharged stamps were not sold to the Troops but
were affixed at the Post Office to letters being mailed. Just 500
of the 5 c. on 1 c. black on azure were surcharged. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

1497 cover imageMalagasy Rebel Mail 1947: Cover sent to "Monsieur le Commandant de
Troupes" in Ilaka in the central Highlands (present district of
Ambositra) struck with fancy framed "MDRM" and oval framed "BUREAU
/ MDRM / ETAT-MAJOR" at lower left in violet. Overall soiling - if
the cover had been found it would probably have led to a death
sentence - and believed unique; sold together with a Censored
French Forces cover from early in the campaign, cancelled "Poste
Aux Armées / T.O.E" (July 30, 1947) mailed to Jura. A rare pair.
Note: After the replacement of the fascist and racist Vichy regime,
life in Madagascar under Free French control made little or no
difference to the local population, with hardships caused by
wholesale looting of or confiscation of crops. Ill feeling towards
the French meant that 'The Mouvement Démocratique de la Rénovation
Malgache' (MDRM) was formed in Paris in 1946 to oppose the new
government. France responded to a rebellion on the island with a
massive Military influx and crackdown, unprecedented in its
ferocity with many atrocities and war crimes, the casualty list
numbering between 40'000-80'000 Malagasy killed. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)
