Amalie Njerve at Fianarantsoa, the surface of the stamp with two
small scrapes and envelope slightly roughly opened at right.
Extremely rare - there are just 9 accepted as genuine covers
recorded. Pencil "Guaranteed, W.O. Bilden" on reverse. Cert.
Philatelic Foundation (1974). Note: Miss Amalie Njerve (1853-1948)

on yellowish wove paper, imperforate, a used example with large
even margins on 1894 cover to Mrs J. Peill, Ambohimanga via
Antananarivo, further endorsed at top "care of Mrs. Borchgrevink",
the stamp cancelled by date "4/12/94" in violet ink. Opening tear
at top and minor vertical creasing to the envelope but extremely
rare - there are just 9 accepted as genuine covers recorded, with
just 4 not part of the Miss Amalie Njerve correspondence. Cert.
Scheller (2019). Note: Dr. Christian and Mrs. Joanna Borchgrevink
arrived in Madagascar in 1869. They founded and directed for 40
years the famous Antsahamanitra girls' school in Antananarivo. Mrs.
Borchgrevink's husband, pastor and doctor, was superintendent of
the Norwegian Missions in Madagascar and they were probably
responsible for the stamp issue. Provenance: Collection Behr /

on yellowish wove paper, imperforate, a used example with large
margins all round on 1896 cover to Dr. Borchgrevink in
Antananarivo, the probable originator of the NMS issue, cancelled
by circular "FIHASINANA / 6 NOVEMBER / XXX 1896 XXX" datestamp in
violet with information strike alongside. The stamp slightly aged,
but this is the sole recorded usage of Fihasinana datestamp on
letter. Opening tear at top and slight aging to the envelope but
extremely rare - there are just 9 accepted as genuine covers
recorded, with just 4 not part of the Miss Amalie Njerve

black. A charming cover. Note: Mailed from Franz Sikora
(1863-1902), an Austrian naturalist and trader in lemur bones,
plants, insects and amphibians. During seven years from end of
1880s, he was entrusted with a scientific mission by the Austrian
government; he lived in Antananarivo and frequented the Protestant
