Norwegian Missionary Society (NMS) 1894: Letterpress 5 vari black on yellowish wove paper, imperforate, a used example with large even margins on 1894 cover to Mrs J. Peill, Ambohimanga via Antananarivo, further
endorsed at top "care of Mrs. Borchgrevink", the stamp cancelled by date "4/12/94" in violet ink. Opening tear at top and minor vertical creasing to the envelope but extremely rare - there are just 9 accepted as genuine covers
recorded, with just 4 not part of the Miss Amalie Njerve correspondence. Cert. Scheller (2019). Note: Dr. Christian and Mrs. Joanna Borchgrevink arrived in Madagascar in 1869. They founded and directed for 40 years the famous
Antsahamanitra girls' school in Antananarivo. Mrs. Borchgrevink's husband, pastor and doctor, was superintendent of the Norwegian Missions in Madagascar and they were probably responsible for the stamp issue. Provenance: Collection
