rare commercial mail from Hodeida bearing Saudi stamps is known

226 (*) image1947: Die Proof of the proposed 1 imadi value designed by Pierre
Munier, engraved in deep blue on sunked card (125 x 163 mm.). The
issue was abandoned as, in February 1948 the Sana'a Post Office was
looted and the new issue of stamps (a set of three depicting
Palaces) were stolen. The set remained unissued and was eventually

Lagos postal stationery comprising registered envelopes, reply

scarce Specimen material and uncommon foreign destinations. Notable
items include the 1895 2 d. grey Registered Envelope (size I)
unused (H&G C1a), one of only 1,700 printed; 1902 2 d.
greenish-blue Registered Envelope with diagonal “SPECIMEN”
overprint and rare violet “ULTRAMAR” handstamp; 1883 1½ d. + 1½ d.
reply cards including early usages to Montenegro and Gabon; 1892 1
d. on 1½ d. overprints including U.P.U. archive Specimen and scarce
usage to Cameroon via Woermann Line; 1892 1 d. carmine cards with
destinations including Germany, Cameroon and Canada; and a 1902–11
uprated and registered reply card to Prague. Further includes a
group of 1893–1907 1 d. stationery cards with origins such as
Badagry, Old Calabar and Warri, and destinations including Togo,
Germany, Switzerland and England, together with unused card and
reply card examples. Condition generally fine with minor faults as
usual. A scarce and wide-ranging holding with strong U.P.U.,

5106 cover imageLagos & Niger Coast Protectorate – Postal Stationery Group. Useful
and specialised holding comprising Lagos 1892 1 d. carmine postal
stationery cards (H&G 7 & 8), six examples including one unused
and five used, with scarce destinations such as Germany (including
“Deutsche Seepost / Hamburg” cancellation), Cameroon and Canada,
and origins including Badagry and Lagos; together with an extensive
1892–97 study of Oil Rivers / Niger Coast Protectorate registered
postal stationery envelopes, neatly written up on 17 album pages
(52 items), almost entirely unused and including nine Specimen
examples, notably a set of the 1894 Niger Coast sizes F, G and H2.
Condition generally fine with some minor imperfections. A scarce
and desirable West African postal stationery group with strong

Specimens. Substantial collection housed in a large album
comprising approximately eighty KGV postal stationery envelopes and
registered envelopes (1907–30), predominantly used with a few
unused and several “Specimen” examples. Good variety of frankings,
registered usages and postmarks, with origins including Aba, Brass,
Degema, Ebute Metta, Ibadan, Ikot-Ekpene, Lagos, Opobo, Onitsha,
Oyo and Zaria, largely addressed to Europe and America, and
including a notable 1932 1½ d. envelope uprated 1 d. + ½ d. to
Kobe, Japan. Condition somewhat variable though many fine or
better. Accompanied by two scarce Nigeria Ife Bronze 6 d.
aerogrammes (1953 and 1956), each overprinted “SPECIMEN” in red
with horseshoe perforated “SPECIMEN” to indicium and handstamped
control numbers on reverse/front respectively (as illustrated in
Horlyck). A wide-ranging and useful postal stationery holding with
strong usage and Specimen interest. 1508 cover imageOccupation of the Lebanese Republic by the Free French Forces
1942/1946: Censored & Military Mail. An interesting group of six
covers relating to the occupation of the Lebanese Republic by the
Free French Forces, mounted and written up on album pages. The
selection includes: an envelope to England bearing a “Contrôle”
label and various censor markings. Mail from Poste aux Armées
F.F.L.–2 (Damascus), including a registered cover carried on a
French Army flight from Syria to Madagascar, with boxed cachet
“Poste aux Armées des F.F.L.”. Two further registered examples. A
registered cover from Bureau Central Militaire No. 1 (Beyrouth).
The group provides a concise illustration of Free French military
postal operations and censorship during the wartime and immediate
post-war occupation period. Condition is as might be expected for
military and censored correspondence of this era, though generally
fine overall. A scarce and historically significant assembly of
Free French Forces occupation mail from Lebanon. Provenance: Ex

1421 cover image1828 (Oct 3-Nov 8): Entire letter from Captain Bellet of the 4th
Regiment of Artillery, garrisoned on the Île Ste. Marie off
Madagascar, to his wife in Toulouse, with interesting contents
regarding the behaviour of the troops under his command "I am not
bored and find ways to keep busy, my duties, administering the
Company...(where) I am surrounded by bad characters, drinkers,
gamblers and skirt-chasers. I have 6 in jail for a month, they are
unredeemable, I will have no pity" and further comments on the
length and unreliable service of French shipping (currently taking
5 months for a letter from home) and the lack of ships from and to
Réunion. Struck on entry with framed "PAYS D'OUTREMER / PAR
BORDEAUX" in black with transit datestamp (Feb 28) and arrival
(March 1) and charged "9" décimes due to pay. A rare and very early

1422 cover image1828 (July 16): Entire letter written by Madame Emilie Bellet from
Toulouse to her husband, Captain Bellet, 4th Regiment of Artillery,
garrisoned on the Île Ste. Marie off Madagascar, endorsed "Par
l'isle de Bourbon", with rate "9" décimes prepaid in manuscript on
reverse, and struck on obverse with "P. 128 P. / MARSEILLE" transit
in black. A very early entire to Île Ste. Marie, France had

Marie and mailed to Nantes via Réunion, endorsed "Le Triste" at
lower left, struck with "ST. DENIS / ILE BOURBON" cds in black (Dec
16) and circular "PP" in black. "Colonies Fra. / Nantes" entry
marking in red on obverse (March 24, 1849). Despite the rulers of
Madagascar being hostile to foreigners at this period, the French

"AMBASADAORAN' / NY / MPANKA / NY / MADAGASCAR" at top left, with
large circular woodblock cachet "CONSULATE OI MADAGASCAR /
MPANJAKA" in red - unclear at base but Mpanjaka means servant to
the King or Queen in Malagasy - with no postal markings but
probably copied from the British type Consular datestamps of the
