at left and showing large portion of the adjoining stamp, right
hand margin just shaved and margin at base otherwise very fine, on
1863 cover from Port Elizabeth to Stirling, Scotland endorsed "per
R.M. Steamer", tied by CGH obliterator in black and carried on the
Union Steam Ship Company "R.M.S Roman". Reverse with oval framed
"PORT ELIZABETH" despatch datestamp (July 15) in red, Cape Town
transit cds in red (July 19) and Stirling arrival cds (Aug 26) in
black; obverse with Circular "PAID / DEVONPORT / CAPE PACKET" in
red (Aug 25) and "11d." in manuscript British credit. A most

three covers bearing 4 d. blue on white paper (SG6a), each with
large margins and tied by CGH obliterators, including examples to
Port Elizabeth with Grahamstown despatch and arrival cds in red, to
Beaufort West with Aliwal despatch, and to the Reverend Wm. Holford
at Mount Coke, British Kaffraria, an unusual missionary
destination; together with 1865 cover from Cradock to Tarkastad the
addressee the town’s first Postmaster (SG19a). Condition generally
good to fine with some minor faults. Also included are 1858 6 d.
pale rose-lilac, a fine single cancelled by Grahamstown “roller”
(SG7), and 1863/64 1 d. brownish-red unused good margins in a deep
chestnut shade large part og. An interesting and varied group with
several scarce usages and well-documented provenance including

valuable group of four named philatelic auction catalogues,
comprising: The “Baron de Worms” Collection of Ceylon, H. R.
Harmer, New Bond Street, London, 20th/23rd June, 1938, with
original illustrated cover; a landmark pre-war sale of classic
Ceylon, long regarded as an important reference for early issues.
Together with The “Charles Curie” Collection of Rare Stamps,
Harmer, Rooke & Co. Ltd., London, April/May 1939 (Parts 1-III,
bound volume with plates); Dr. William Byam, O.B.E., Egypt, Robson
Lowe Ltd., London, 24th to 25th October 1961, a specialised postal
history and stamp sale; and C. D. Desai World famous Classic India
sale, Robson Lowe 25th/26th May 1949. Condition generally fine with
the usual aging to the plate leaf pages, bindings sound, plates
present; Curie spine shelf worn, the de Worms volume with
institutional library marking to cover and the Byam has a coffee
ring stain to front. An attractive and useful trio of named sale
