644 (*) imageDESMADRYL & EARLY LITHOGRAPHED ISSUES 1854/1856: Specialised group
of early Chilean classics centred on the 1854 Desmadryl 5 c.
reddish-brown issues (Scott 3/3a), comprising a representative
study of shades, watermark orientations and cancellations. Included
are used examples showing the four different watermark types, with
straight-line SANTA ROSA (two), S. CARLOS and SERENA cds (April
1854), blue target cancellation, and further fine shades; multiples
include strip of three, block of four, strip of six, a rare
vertical strip of four on March 1854 cover and a pair on 1856
Copiapó cover, together with an example showing a pre-printing
paper fold. In addition, 1854 lithographed 5 c. red-brown (Scott 7
var.) exhibiting the Lithographic Transfer Flaw with the “C” of
FRANCO squeezed (Blank 5 / Vt 5/15), neatly cancelled and very
fine. Condition somewhat variable but generally attractive, a
scarce and desirable assembly from this classic and challenging

USAGES, 1857/1867: Exceptional group of classic Chilean covers (12)
illustrating the 1855–66 Perkins Bacon London printings and
subsequent Santiago “Estancos” issues, with strong emphasis on
maritime, inland and foreign destination usages. Included are 1857
entires bearing 5 c. brown-red (Scott 8), comprising a Concepción
to Valparaíso pair endorsed “Vapor Constitution” and a fine
Santiago triple-rate franking (ex Corinphila); Talcahuano to
Valparaíso 5 c. red covers including rare greenish-blue target
cancellation (cert. Sismondo); 1862 cover to railway engineer in
Caldera with 5 c. red and 10 c. deep blue (cert. PF, ex “Crown
Point”); foreign mail to Peru and Great Britain with scarce “PANAMA
/ TRANSIT” markings and rated due on arrival; a very rare 1861
cover bearing diagonally bisected 10 c. deep blue (signed
Pemberton); quadruple-rate 20 c. green usage (Scott 13); and 1867
entire with 5 c. rose-red and 10 c. bright blue tied by rare
octagonal “Star in Sunburst” handstamp (cert. RPSL). Condition
variable with minor faults noted, yet a most attractive and scarce
assembly of classic Chilean postal history with maritime
endorsements, railway association, bisect usage and foreign
