1876/77 (Dated 1293): Reprint of Sanar, Plate B, position 14, on horizontally laid medium thick paper, printed in deep black, unused with clear to fine margins all round. The FERRARY - TAPLING "swap" stamp,
whereby Thomas Tapling exchanged this stamp for the Mauritius Post Office 2 d. blue that now resides in the Tapling collection in the British Library. This stamp, taken as genuine at the time, was reprinted in Peshawar in 1880
presumably with the intention of selling examples to British Officers returning from service in the 2nd. Afghan War. Very few examples appear to have been 'issued' for sale and only two or three are known today. Originally in the
Tapling collection, it was “swapped” after considerable negotiation with Baron Philippe de la Renotière Ferrary - the stamps were adjudged to be of equal value at the time. Provenance: Collections Tapling, Ferrary, Appleton, Boggs; thereafter Horst Dietrich, DF, Geneva, 4 Dec 2014, lot 50000. (Image 1)
