Early Mail 1875 (Sept 19): Fragile unpaid cover with full contents from Lal Pur, carried by raft to Peshawar down the Kabul River, arriving on the same day in Peshawar (quicker than overland which would take
upwards of three days), where the letter was redirected to the addressee who was on pilgrimage in India, with reverse showing Peshawar cds, Phaphund, Umballa (Sept 21), Sooltanpore cds (Sept 24), Allahabad (Sept 27) cds, Jhelum cds
(Oct 1), eventually delivered in Deena, India on 2 October 1875. The raft service down the Kabul River was spasmodic with just a dozen examples recorded between 1869 and 1883. Rare. Provenance: Collection Major Adrian E. Hopkins
