3431 cover imageIncoming Mail via Pacific Ocean 1894: Ecuador 3 c. postal stationery card from Guayaquil to Sydney, New South Wales, lightly cancelled and endorsed "via Panama and San Francisco” at top and transit datestamps on the obverse including New York, San Francisco and Sydney. Some edge wear and the reverse with the message mostly obscured due to adherence from a postcard album. A rare origin / destination postcard and the earliest recorded cover from Ecuador to the Australian Colonies. Route: Departed Guayaquil 20 Sept 1894 by steamer to Panama; overland to Aspinwall. United States Mail Steamship Co: Departed Aspinwall by steamer to New York (11 Oct); by rail to San Francisco. Pacific Mail Steamship Co: Departed San Francisco (18 Oct) per “Monowai” via Auckland (8 Nov) to Sydney, arriving 13 Nov 1894 (54 days). Note: This postcard is endorsed “Via Panama” at top. If the card had shipped direct to San Francisco instead of Panama and New York, it would have saved a fortnight's transit time. (Image 1) (Image 2)
