3095 cover imageIncoming Mail Overland via Southampton 1861 (Sept 16) : Cover from Copenhagen, Denmark to Ballarat, Victoria with Copenhagen datestamp at the left and rated manuscript “51/9” (60 skillings) at left in black comprising 51 Danish skillings (representing “12” silbergroschen in red) and 9 skilling for the forwarding fee from Denmark to Hamburg. “10” (pence) manuscript in red at right credit to Great Britain for the single letter rate from Denmark to England. On the reverse are transit datestamps for Hamburg, Melbourne and arrival at the Ballarat gold diggings. A fine and rare cover. Route: Departed Copenhagen 16 Sept 1861 by rail to Hamburg (17 Sept); by steamer to London (19 Sept). P&O Line: Departed Southampton (20 Sept) per “Indus” via Malta (1 Oct) to Alexandria (5 Oct); overland to Suez; “Bengal” (9 Oct) to Galle (24 Oct); “Salsette” (24 Oct) via King Georges Sound (9 Nov) to Melbourne (17 Nov); by rail to Ballarat, arriving 18 Nov 1861 (63 days). Note: The addressee was Baron Oscar Wedel-Jarsberg (1822-1909) who emigrated to Victoria in the late 1850’s and worked many of the gold diggings at Ballarat, Maldon and Heathcote. He was a member of the Norwegian nobility and his brother was the Commodore of the Norwegian Navy whilst another was the Norwegian Ambassador to Spain. 6078 cover image1883 (July 25): Registered 'circular' envelope to Scotland franked with 1882 bisect '½' in red on 1 d. lilac in four severed pairs consisting of stamps from right and left, tied by 'A07' obliterators, DOMINICA cds at base. The envelope was originally addressed and unsealed with flap tucked in to Edinburgh whose arrival cds appears on reverse and re-addressed to London and sealed, the old address carefully removed and new one added.
