3424 cover imageIncoming Mail via Pacific Ocean 1859 (23 July): Entire letter headed Valparaiso, Chile mailed via New South Wales to Hong Kong, carried as a private consignees letter from Chile to Sydney where a New South Wales 1859 Diadem 6 d. fawn, imperforate with three large margins was affixed and tied by a “N.S.W.” in ovals handstamp in black, prepaying 6 d. for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to Hong Kong. Endorsed “Via Australia” at lower left and manuscript “4” (cents) for the Hong Kong ship letter inwards fee. On the reverse is a shipping forwarders handstamp “CROSS & Co. / VALPARAISO” in blue with transit datestamps for Sydney and Hong Kong. Very fine and exceptionally rare. Route - Private sailing ship: Departed Valparaiso 23 July 1859 per “Lizzie Spaulding” to Sydney. Departed Sydney (4 Nov) per “Helios” to Hong Kong, arriving 18 Dec 1859. Note: The contents are remarkable and relate to the trade of flour between Chile and China. “The flour market, during the past year - which we expected from the good crop would have ruled low - has been irregular, and affected by the Revolution which disturbed the whole country from January to May. Some of the crop has been destroyed by military movements, and some are gathered and left in the interior so as not to be available for shipment, until the wet season passes, and the roads become good...” The 1859 Chilean Revolution was an armed rebellion by the Chilean Liberals against the conservative government of President Manuel Montt. The revolution took place from January 5 to May 21, 1859, and ended in failure, with 5,000 people killed. It was the second attempt by the Liberals to overthrow the government, following an unsuccessful attempt in 1851. The earliest recorded cover from Chile to the Australian Colonies and exceptional usage as a forwarded cover to Hong Kong. Provenance: Collection Blank, Forster. (Image 1) (Image 2)
