Handstruck “U.S.CHARGE /TO COLLECT / 5 CENTS” applied at San Francisco. A 5 cent Postage Due adhesive applied at Barre indicating the deficient postage was collected from the recipient. Cover faults, but a rare example of postage dues on Western Australian mail. Route - P&O Line: Departed King Georges Sound 29 June 1885 per “Carthage” to Melbourne. Private steamship: Departed Melbourne (15 July) per “Burrumbeet” to Sydney. The Pacific Mail Steamship Company: Departed Sydney (16 July) per “Zealandia” via Auckland (21 July) to San Francisco (11 Aug); by rail via Chicago and New York (19 Aug) to Barre, arriving circa 21 Aug 1885 (56 days). Note: The contract for the San Francisco route was with the New South Wales and Queensland governments. Western Australian mail was treated as underpaid and had to pay the additional 5 cents internal postage. (Image 1) (Image 2)

3416 cover imageVia Pacific Ocean & San Francisco 1887 (Dec 25): Cover from Jarrahdale, Western Australia to Welland, Ontario, Canada bearing 1883 Western Australia 1 d. yellow-ochre and 4 d. carmine in a horizontal pair lightly cancelled by the 12 barred circle “33” of Jarrahdale with despatch datestamp at left, prepaying 9 d. for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to the United States of America. Endorsed “Via Sydney & San F.” at lower left, with arrival of Welland on the reverse. Fine, a rare destination from Western Australia with just three covers recorded to Canada. Route - P&O Line: Departed King Georges Sound 25 Dec 1887 per “Valetta” to Melbourne (31 Dec); by rail to Sydney. Oceanic Steamship Co: Departed Sydney (26 Jan 1888) per “Almeda” via Auckland (30 Jan) to San Francisco (19 Feb); by rail via Chicago and Windsor (25 Feb) to Welland, arriving 27 Feb 1888 (69 days). Note: This cover should have been taxed 5 cents by the United States postal officials since Western Australia did not participate in the San Francisco contract. Note: After the Polish seizure of Lviv in November 1918, the Authorities of the Western Ukrainian National Republic were evacuated further east, first to Ternopil, then to Stanyslaviv. The main post office in the Pokutia region in Kolomyia lost contact with central authorities and run out of stamps. On a conference on December 5, 1918 the District Commandant, Capt. Prymak, the Postmaster Ivasiuk , and Dr. Ivan Cherniavsky, the Chairman of the District Court in Kolomyia and a well-known philatelist decided to overprint local stocks of Austrian stamps. These Kolomea overprints were done on December 10 by the printing shop of Wilhelm Brauner and on December 12, they came into postal use. What a swift organisation.
