The rough perf. issues of Western Australia are exceedingly rare on cover with less than 6 covers known bearing the 6 d. value. 3025 cover imageOverland via Southampton 1857 (June 6): Entire from Perth, Western Australia to London, England endorsed “Per Overland Mail via K(ing) G(eorges) Sound”, bearing 1854 Western Australia 1854 1 d. black, imperforate horizontal pair with margins just touched to fine and 4 d. pale blue with close margins all round, cancelled by the void bars obliterator in black and prepaying 6 d. for a ½ ounce ship letter to England. Transit datestamps of Perth (May 12) and London arrival cds (Aug 3). Horizontal fold and small stain on the 4 d. otherwise a very fine and attractive first issue entire. Route - The European and Australian Royal Mail Co: Departed King Georges Sound 6 June 1857 per “Simla” via Galle (23 June) to Suez (12 July); overland to Alexandria. Moss & Co. Line: “Scamander” (14 July) via Malta (19 July) to Southampton (2 Aug); by rail to London, arriving 3 Aug 1857 (58 days). Note: This entire was written by Robert Hapgood, a prominent merchant who arrived in Perth on the “Egyptian” on the 28 December 1831. The cover is addressed to the Marine Brewery in Ratcliff, London, which was established in 1823 and sold ninety years later to the Cannon Brewery with twenty three ale houses. The contents refer to the supply of twenty hogheads (barrels) of brown stout. One other similar cover dated 1856, also from Perth, is recorded from this correspondence. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

3074 cover imageOverland via Southampton 1867 (Aug 3): Cover from Albany, Western Australia to Edinburgh, Scotland bearing 1860 West Australia 2 d. pale orange imperforate, a three margin example slightly oxidised at base, 1864 2 d. yellow and 6 d. violet, perf. 12½ and cancelled by numeral “6” obliterator of Albany. Prepaid 10 d. for a ½ ounce ship letter to Scotland via Marseilles and with preprinted ribbon at upper left which is unusual from Western Australia. Although this envelope was correctly pre-paid via Marseilles, it was inexplicably transported via Southampton, (the mails via Marseilles arrived in London on 10 September). Vertical crease at left away from the adhesives, otherwise generally fine. A rare and important three colour imperf./perforated mixed issue franking with just four Western Australia covers recorded thus. One of the scarcest mid-period covers from Western Australia and the earliest recorded Late Fee cover. Vertical file fold crosses the left-hand 1 d. and the stamps possibly excised and replaced. Guildford despatch datestamp at the lower left and London arrival in red on the reverse. Despite the faults, this franking is a rarity from Western Australia. Three imperforate covers are recorded from Western Australia prepaying the 9 d. rate via Marseilles to England. Two, including this, are fronts with just one full cover known. At the lower left is a superb strike of the “GENERAL POST OFFICE / ♚ / PERTH / WESTERN AUSTRALIA” handstamp in black and three Swiss "Ambulant" transit datestamps (March 12) in black (presumably mis-directed). Corner imperfection to envelope but generally very fine and one of the most remarkable destination covers of the Australian Colonies, especially from the more remote colony of Western Australia. The only recorded cover from the Australian Colonies to Heligoland. Transit and arrival datestamp of Hamburg on the reverse. A rare destination for Western Australia and one of the earliest recorded covers to Germany. This cover is addressed in the hand of Sir Ferdinand von Mueller, the Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Melbourne who was a prolific writer to the scientific community around the world. Pairs of the Western Australian Perkins Bacon issue are rare on cover, this being the earlier of only two registered covers recorded from Western Australia to Germany. Rare and attractive.
