6245 cover image1934 (Aug 23): Unpaid cover from Majunga, Madagascar with despatch cds on front together with triangular framed 'T', manuscript "R" in pencil and registration number "100" in red crayon. On reverse arrival cds (Aug 27) with postage dues to value of 31 c. applied, apparently reflecting a recalculated deficiency of 50 gold centimes, comprising 1926/30 9 c. black / orange in a lower marginal vertical strip of three (R3-5/1 on sheet, showing 'cent.s' error on central stamp) and 1930/33 2 c. black / salmon horizontal pair (6th setting, 3rd printing, R2/1-2), tied by three strikes of "REG. / ZANZIBAR" cds (Aug 28). Some creasing affecting some stamps, the right hand 2 c. adhesive with tear, still a spectacular and desirable mixed issue franking, with a rare commercial usage of the 9 c. error in a se-tenant multiple, which is also the latest recorded date of use of this issue. Provenance: Collection Griffith-Jones. (Image 1) (Image 2)
