3190 cover imageOverland via Brindisi 1870 (Sept 3): Cover from Castlemaine, Victoria to Northampton, England bearing 1868 Victoria Laureate 1 s. indigo blue on blue paper, cancelled by the Castlemaine duplex and prepaying 1 s. and underpaid 1 d. for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter via Brindisi. Unusually the route is not endorsed on this cover with a very fine strike of the “INSUFFICIENTLY PAID / FOR BRINDISI ROUTE / DEFICIENT POSTAGE / d3” handstamp in black applied at London, with the “d3” scored through and replaced by “1” (penny) manuscript in black representing the underpayment to be paid by the recipient. Fine, with a partial offset impression of the Deficient Postage handstamp on the reverse. A rarity, being the only example recorded from the Australian Colonies with the “d3” scored through and additional postage marked up in manuscript and another amount applied. Route - P&O Line: Departed Melbourne 11 Sept 1870 per “Avoca” to Galle (2 Oct); “Candia” (4 Oct) to Suez (20 Oct); overland to Alexandria. Adriatic & Oriental Line: “Cairo” (23 Oct) to Brindisi; by rail from Brindisi (26 Oct) to London 31 Oct 1870 (51 days). (Image 1) (Image 2)

Struck with very fine “3d” handstamp in black applied in London for the deficiency to be paid by the recipient. Horizontal fold just crosses the adhesive at base, otherwise fine and extremely rare. Route - P&O Line: Departed Melbourne 11 Oct 1870 per “Geelong” to Galle (31 Oct); “Mooltan” (3 Nov) to Suez (17 Nov); overland to Alexandria. Adriatic & Oriental Line: “Tomasco” (20 Nov) to Brindisi; by rail from Brindisi (23 Nov) via London (26 Nov) to Edinburgh, arriving 27 Oct 1870 (46 days). Note: All covers recorded from the Australian Colonies endorsed for the Marseilles route and carried by the supplementary route via Brindisi during the Franco Prussian War received the large boxed "Insufficiently Paid" handstamp except two: this cover from Victoria with the 3d handstamp, and another from New South Wales, both carried on the same voyage. The only recorded cover from Victoria with the "3d" handstamp used for deficiency via Brindisi. Provenance: Collection Moreton. (Image 1) (Image 2)

3197 cover imageOverland via Brindisi 1870 (Dec 6): Cover from Geelong, Victoria to London endorsed "via Brindisi" bearing 1870 Victoria 1 d. dull green, corner fault and 1868 1 s. indigo blue on blue paper, cancelled by the Geelong duplex and prepaying 1 s. 1 d. for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter via Brindisi. Some cover imperfections, but a rare franking. It is estimated that less than a dozen examples of this rate via Brindisi from Victoria are recorded, nearly all of them with faults. Route - P&O Line: Departed Melbourne 6 Dec 1870 per “Avoca” via King Georges Sound (12 Dec) to Galle (25 Dec); “Candia” (28 Dec) to Suez (11 Jan 1871); overland to Alexandria; “Delta” (14 Jan) to Brindisi (18 Jan); by rail from Brindisi to London, arriving 23 Jan 1871 (49 days). 3282 cover imageOverland via Triest 1872 (Dec 6): Cover from Cockatoo, Victoria to Lillerod, Denmark bearing 1870 2 d. dull lilac-mauve, single and horizontal pair and Laureate 6 d. prussian blue, neatly cancelled by barred numeral “575” of Cockatoo with despatch datestamp at top, prepaying 1 s. for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to Denmark. “6” (d) manuscript in red credit from Victoria to Austria for transmission from Alexandria to Trieste and "2" (silbergroschen) manuscript in blue representing the rail postage via Trieste to Denmark, scored through and rerated “17” (skillings) for the forwarding fees to be paid upon receipt. Framed “Utilstraekkeng / Frankkeret” (Insufficiently Franked) handstamp in black applied at Copenhagen. A scarce destination from a small gold mining town. Most attractive and scarce. Route - P&O Line: Departed Melbourne 6 Dec 1872 per “Behar” to Galle (26 Dec); “Cathay” (27 Dec) to Suez (9 Jan 1873); overland to Alexandria. Austrian Lloyd Line: By steamer to Trieste; by rail from Trieste via Copenhagen to Lillerod (over 49 days). Note: Given there are no transit datestamps on this cover, it is possible that it was sent via Brindisi, which would mean that the cover is only prepaid 1 s. and underpaid 9 d. for a 1 s. 9 d. 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to Denmark. This would account for the Danish tax markings. Barred numeral “575” is a rare numeral postmark from Cockatoo, a small gold mining town in Victoria and rated 'RRR'. The town no longer exists, with just two covers recorded, both from this correspondence. Illustrated in “The Barred Numeral Cancellations of Victoria” by Hugh Freeman on page 191. Provenance: Collection Freeman. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)
