Prepaid 11 d. and underpaid 3 d. for a ¼ ounce ship letter of 1 s. 2 d. to Schleswig Holstein. “INSUFFICIENTLY/PAID” handstamp in red and “GB / 1f 62½c” handstamp in red both applied at Melbourne in transit. “F. 39” Franco-German Convention handstamp (Van der Linden fig. 1174) in black (just four usages of this handstamp known on mail from Victoria) and “18½” (skillings) manuscript in red credit to France for transit via Marseille. A very colourful cover in superb condition. Route - P&O Line: Departed Melbourne 28 July 1865 per “Salsette” to Galle (19 Aug); “Bengal” (19 Aug) to Suez (5 Sept); overland to Alexandria; “Syria” (7 Sept) via Malta (10 Sept) to Marseilles (14 Sept); by rail via Danish Post Office in Hamburg (16 Sept) to Ratzeburg, arriving 17 Sept 1865 (51 days). Note: Although endorsed via Southampton, this envelope was placed on the quicker route via Marseilles. This cover was sent during a very turbulent period for the Duchy of Schleswig-Holstein, a territory governed by the Kingdom of Denmark at this time. With the German speaking southern Schleswig rebelling and wanting to become part of the North German Confederation, Denmark was forced to go to war with Prussia in 1848, winning the war but still unable to integrate the territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. In 1864 (the year before this cover was mailed) Denmark tried again to formally integrate the territory, and so the Second Schleswig War was fought, this time both Prussia and Austria defeated the Danes at the Battle of Dybbol. The two powers shared the territory between them. The Austrians administered the territory whilst the Prussians governed Schleswig. War broke out between them in 1866, just after the arrival of this cover, with Prussia emerging victorious. They annexed Schleswig-Holstein in 1867. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

3155 cover imageOverland via Marseilles 1865 (May 26): Mourning cover from Melbourne, Victoria to Victoria, Vancouver Island, bearing 1865 Victoria Laureate 1 s. blue on blued paper cancelled by the Melbourne duplex and prepaying 1 s. and underpaid 5 d. for a ½ ounce ship letter to Vancouver Island. “11” (pence) manuscript in black debit to Great Britain for forwarding to Vancouver Island. The adhesive with fault at top where folded over the envelope. One of the great mail route covers of the Australian Colonies with a detailed explanation below. The earliest recorded cover from Victoria to Vancouver Island with only a couple of covers recorded from all the Australian Colonies carried via the Central Overland Route. Introduction of new postal routes to the west coast of the United States of America and Canada Up to 1857, postal items addressed to the west coast of the United States were sent via the Pacific Ocean. After the conclusion of the Crimean War in 1856, England was reviewing it’s trading and postal routes. In February 1857, a new rate was introduced by England combined with a new route to the west coast of the United States for New South Wales, Queensland, and Victoria. The introduction of the new 1 s. 9 d. rate in February 1857 via England was expensive compared to the default transmission of mail to the west coast of the United States via the Pacific Ocean. Up to the beginning of 1859, the carriage of mail from the United Kingdom to San Francisco was carried via Panama. Although nearly all mail recorded from the Australian Colonies was still sent via the Pacific Ocean, only a couple of covers are recorded via England transversing the new western United States route. In March 1859, a new contract was established to carry the mail by rail from New York, via Chicago to St. Joseph, Missouri, and then by stage coach using three contractors to Sacramento, and finally by river steamer to San Francisco. This became known as the Central Overland Route, the journey of this cover from Victoria to Vancouver Island. Route - P&O Line: Departed Melbourne 26 May 1865 per “Madras” to Galle (16 June); “Mooltan” (19 June) to Suez (6 July); overland to Alexandria; “Poonah” (8 July) via Malta (11 July) to Marseilles (15 July); by rail via London to Liverpool.
