3329 cover imageVia Galle 1857 (March 15): Entire letter from Melbourne, Victoria to Canton, China endorsed "Per European" bearing 1854 Victoria Woodblock 6 d. dull orange, four close to large margins, crossed by light file fold, tied by barred numeral “1” obliterator and prepaying 6 d. for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to China. Melbourne and transit datestamp of Hong Kong on the reverse. Unpaid from Hong Kong to Canton (mail from the Australian Colonies could only be prepaid to Hong Kong. One of the earliest covers recorded from Victoria to China. Route - The European and Australian Royal Mail Co: Departed Melbourne 15 March 1857 per “European” to Galle (4 April). P&O Line: “Pekin” (12 April) via Penang (18 April) and Singapore (20 April) to Hong Kong (29 April 1857; thence by private ship to Canton (over 46 days). Note: There are no Victorian Half Length covers recorded to China. The earliest available imperforate covers are from the Woodblocks issues. This entire was addressed to the famous American merchant Augustine Heard & Co. and the contents provide a great insight into the trading conditions in Melbourne with the influx of miners to the Victorian gold fields: “Since our last respects of Jan 26, we have had to report a continue stagnation in business, with very little prospect of reaction. Imports of most every description have been daily adding to our heavy stocks, and looking into the future, we cannot with any confidence predicts an improved state of trade for some time to come...” Provenance: Collection Kirk, Geitenbeek. Note: It is unusual that this cover was sent via the non-contract steamship “Oneida”. The P&O Line contract steamship “Benares” sailed on the same day via Suez with the mails reaching Southampton in 51 days, demonstrating the speed of the overland route when compared to this voyage via Cape Horn of 82 days. The “Oneida” carried 65,000 ounces of gold on this voyage, equivalent to over Australian $300 million today. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

3395 cover imageVia Peru & Panama 1858 (May 23): Entire letter from Melbourne, Victoria to Boston, United States of America endorsed "per European via Marseilles", bearing Victoria 1854 Half Length 3 d. blue, 1854 Octagonal 1 s. blue, 1854 Woodblock 2 s. dull bluish green and 1857 Emblem 1 d. yellow-green, all with generally fine to just touched margins lightly cancelled by barred numeral “1” of Melbourne and prepaid 3 s. 4 d. for a letter over 1 ounce to the United States. Postal markings include oval framed “INSUFFICIENTLY PAID / VIA MARSEILLES” handstamp in red for underpayment of a 1 ounce letter with “1/4” (sterling) manuscript in red credit to Great Britain for transatlantic shipment scored through since the letter was not sent via that route. Two vertical filing creases, one of which crosses the 3 d. adhesive, otherwise very fine and an exceptionally rare four colour franking of great charm. One of the most important covers sent via Peru and Panama from the Australian Colonies. Route - Private sailing ship: Departed Melbourne 23 May 1858 per “Wellfleet” to Callao, Peru; by steamer from Callao to Panama; overland to Aspinwall. Pacific Mail Steamship Co: Departed Aspinwall (4 July) per “Star of the West” to New York 13 Aug 1858; by rail to Boston (over 82 days). Note: There were no published rates for letters over 1 ounce from Victoria in this period. The envelope was prepaid for up to 1 oz. but was overweight, however, it is interesting to note that the letter was not redirected to the cheaper route of via Southampton. Instead, the cover was placed in the slowest possible route via Callao, Peru. The indicators that this envelope was sent via Callao are that there are no transit datestamps for London or transatlantic handstamps for it’s arrival in the United States. The postal officials of Great Britain and the United States were meticulous in recording the accounting deficiencies between both countries, with covers from this period distinctly cancelled to record these shortfalls. This envelope has none of these cancellations. Provenance: Collection Purves, Perry, Geitenbeek. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

The envelope was grossly underpaid and thus sent by the slower via Panama route. Postal markings include “INSUFFICIENTLY PAID / VIA THE / UNITED KINGDOM” applied in red at Melbourne for the Southampton route and “SHIP 6” applied at San Francisco for 6 cents due comprising 3 cents for a non-contract ship letter and 3 cents to forward to New York. A couple of minor cover imperfections, otherwise fine. Route - Australasian Steam Navigation Co: Departed Melbourne 1 Sept 1863 per “City of Melbourne” to Sydney. Private sailing ship: Departed Sydney (10 Oct) per “Mary & Edith” to San Francisco (22 Dec). Pacific Mail Steamship Co: Departed San Francisco (23 Dec) per “St. Louis” to Panama (9 Jan 1864); by rail to Aspinwall. Atlantic & Pacific Steamship Co: Departed Aspinwall (16 Jan) per “Ocean Queen”, to New York 29 Jan 1865; by rail to Farmington (over 192 days). Note: This cover is interesting in that the journey from Melbourne to San Francisco took 141 days, when a normal sailing voyage would take about 75 days. In early August 1863, there were no ships sailing directly to San Francisco from Melbourne, so the cover was sent to Sydney for the next available ship. The “Mary & Edith” arrived in Sydney on the 8 September advertising for cargoes to San Francisco, and did not sail until the 10 October. A rare and late cover from the Australian Colonies via the Panama route by sailing ship Provenance: Collection Forster. (Image 1) (Image 2)
