2367 cover imageEastbound Mail from Venezuela (1940/41): Group of eight covers starting with 1940 (April 1st) cover from Maracaibo to Hamburg with OKW censor tape on reverse, further 1940 business envelope from Caracas to Milan, 1940 envelope to Denmark, 1941 envelope to Switzerland, 1940 (June 8) envelope endorsed 'por avion / via Recife - Roma' to Vienna, 1940 double rate letter of 10 g. sent registered from Maracaibo to Genova as well as two envelopes of the same correspondence from Caracas to Milan with one bearing instructional handstamp 'Por Avion L.A.T.I. Via Natal' on reverse and censored by the British Examiner in Trinidad, other censored on arrival in Milan. Venezuela remained neutral until Feb. 16th 1945. 6483 cover image1866c: Undated outer letter sheet from La Guaira to Caracas, bearing 1866/69 1 r. vermilion, two single examples, one of which showing top sheet margin, additionally a diagonal bisect, all very attractive with large margins for the most part, paying a 2½ Reales rate which corresponds to the weight from 1½ to 1¾ ounces for the first distance, tied by several strikes of "CORREOS / LA GUAIRA" double-circle without date. Filing fold at left which just impinges on the left-hand adhesive, being hardly visible, a visually striking franking, which is the only combination recorded of this kind, signed Roura, cert. 831 cover image1859 (March 19): Cover from Beechworth to Bologna, Papal States franked at double rate via Southampton at 2/4 d., with 1854 1 s. blue in a vertical pair, margins good to shaved, and Emblems 4 d. dull rose red, perf. 12 (corner of stamp was folded under on despatch and has since been folded back for better display) tied by Beechworth barred numeral "6" in black with despatc datestamp verso (March 19). London red transit and circular "PD" on front (June 11) and reverse with Paris and Bologna cds's. The manuscript rate "1/10 d." represents double the 11 d. rate per ¼ ounce for mail from Britain to the Papal States. Illustrated in the Palmer on page 25. A rare cover: only three stamped covers to the Papal States are recorded in the Census, this being the sole double rate cover via Southampton known. "REGISTERED / GEELONG" cds (March 30) in black (earliest usage) and Sydney datestamps on reverse of transit (April 4) and West Maitland arrival (April 5). Manuscript "Try Sydney" at left and further manuscript "c/o Secretary of the Posat Office". Cover returned after a month via Sydney (May 8) to Melbourne (May 11) after failure to find the addressee.
