Note: All of the early registered covers from Victoria to Switzerland were addressed to a few families near Locarno. These were Swiss migrants arriving in Victoria from 1856 heading towards the goldfields of Sandhurst and Hepburn. Some travelled further afield to new gold strikes such as this cover from Yackandandah. With the discovery of gold in 1852, it became a gold mining centre known for it’s alluvial mining deposits. The Post Office at Yackandandah opened on the 13 June 1856, the year before this cover was posted. These registered covers to Switzerland were discovered around 1925 and dispersed to the philatelic market in Paris. Many of the covers are in poor condition and most of the stamps are badly cut into. This collection contains the two finest covers from this important correspondence. Provenance: Collections Burrus, Perry, Winchester. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

3039 cover imageIntroduction of new Postal rates to the West Coast of the United States of America Up to 1857. Postal items addressed to the West coast of the United States were sent via the Pacific Ocean. After the conclusion of the Crimean War in 1856, England reviewed its trading and postal routes. In February 1857, a new rate to the West coast of the United States was introduced via England for New South Wales, Queensland, and Victoria. It was available at 1 s. 8½ d. via Southampton, necessarily overpaid to 1 s. 9 d. since there were no ½ d. stamps available. It was calculated by adding the 6 d. Empire rate to the 1 s. 2½ d. paid to destination rate from England to the West coast of the United States. Overland via Southampton 1858 (Aug 16): Cover from Melbourne, Victoria to San Francisco, USA bearing Victoria 1854 Half Length 3 d. greenish blue imperforate, Woodblock 6 d. dull orange and Octagonal 1 s. blue, all with margins in places, cancelled by barred numeral “1” obliterator of Melbourne. The cover is prepaid 1 s. 9 d. and overpaid ½ d. (see above) for a ½ ounce ship letter to the West coast of the United States via England. “1/2½” (sterling) manuscript in red credit to Great Britain for forwarding to the West coast of the United States and “PAID” handstamp in black applied at San Francisco to indicate the envelope was prepaid to destination. Illustrated in colour Plate 15 in “The Pre-UPU Mail of Victoria” by Ben Palmer. Only two covers are recorded from Victoria prepaying 1 s. 9 d. to the West coast; this cover is the earliest and only example from the Australian Colonies forwarded south through Panama. Fine and attractive cover being one of the most remarkable mail route covers from the Australian Colonies. Cert. RPSL (2008). Route - The European and Australian Royal Mail Co: Departed Melbourne 16 Aug 1858 per “Columbian” via Galle (14 Sept) to Suez (3 Oct), P&O Line: “Cambria” (5 Oct) via Malta (9 Oct) to Southampton (18 Oct). Royal Mail Steam Packet Co: Departed Southampton (18 Oct) per “Parana” to St. Thomas (16 Nov). Departed St. Thomas (18 Nov) per “Dee” via Santa Martha (21 Nov) and Cartagena to Colon (23 Nov); overland to Panama. Pacific Steam Navigation Co: “Sonora” to San Francisco, arriving 15 December 1858 (121 days). Note: The introduction of the new 1/9 d. rate in February 1857 via England was expensive compared to the default transmission of mail to the West coast of the USA via the Pacific Ocean. Up to the beginning of 1859, the carriage of mail from the United Kingdom to San Francisco was transmitted via Panama. In early 1859, the route was reformed to an overland route by rail to St. Louis and Butterfield stagecoach to San Francisco. The other Victorian cover, and two covers from Queensland (Lot 3063) were carried by via this secondary route. Thus, the route South via Panama to the West coast of the USA was only availaable for less than two years before being discontinued. Provenance: Collections Col. Green, Perry, Palmer, Forster.
