6456 cover imageUS Post Offices in Puerto Rico, 1918 (Sept 27): Registered envelope to La Romana, Dominican Republic, franked US 1 c. and 12 c. tied by black MAYAGUEZ datestamp, reverse with two violet cds's, one that has been overlaid by censor type, maybe kept by censor as the next backstamp is from La Romana dated 2 Oct 1918, front with blue manuscript "non reclamando", various registration handstamps and final return Mayaguez cds (April 15, 1920). A repair was made to the envelope at La Romana with paper used tied by blue-green handstamp, on return violet three-line "Receeived in bad condition at Dead Letter Office, San Juan, Porto Rico". 443 cover image"El Sol de Mayo" 1856 (Oct 1): Carrier 60 c. deep blue, thin figures, a fine example (position 30 with "ç" in DILIGENCIA on the plate of 35 subjects) just touched on two framelines but sheet marginal at right (one of just two examples of this stamp on letter showing sheet margin), in a rich shade, uncancelled on 29 December 1857 entire letter from Montevideo to Mercedes. A stamp of superb appearance, the entire with two file folds and some splits at folds otherwise a marvellous example of this rare adhesive on letter. R. A. 444 cover image"El Sol de Mayo" 1856 (Oct 1): Carrier 60 c. deep blue, thin figures, a fine example with staining around the edge of the margins when adhered to the 19 January 1857 entire letter from Rafael Rodriguez in Durazno to Francisco Corta in Montevideo, endorsed "con un fardito" (with a package). The stamp with manuscript cancellation "Claudio el orio" (?) in a very deep indigo shade showing the "Cracked Plate" variety with crack running from NE corner to the edge of the vignette and large break in the frameline below "S" of CENTAVOS (Lee Type 20). Edge wear to the entire but a great rarity. Unrecorded in the R.A. Siegel / Walter Britz census of 37 covers. Signed E.J. Lee Scott = $ 6'500. Provenance: Collection E.J. April): Envelope addressed to USA franked with 1931 Vatican 25/30 c. in combination with 1932 Italy 50 c. cancelled by "Citta del Vaticano 29.4.32.19" and airpost 75 c.paying the airfee cancelled by "Roma Ferrovia-Posta Aerea 30.4.32-6" forwarded to a Transatlantic Ship leaving from Gibraltar to catch up in the Atlantic the mail packet boat already enroute to US. The aircraft used was a Dornier Wal. This scheme was expected to cut the delivery time to North America by two to three days. Only 14 covers recorded with mixed franking from ltaly and Vatican.
