3091 cover imageIncoming Mail Overland via Southampton 1857 (July 20): Cover from Oxford, USA to Melbourne, Victoria, redirected to the Mount Korong Diggings bearing 1851 USA 1 c. blue, Type II, four close to large margins with 12 c. black, horizontal strip of three with just touched to good margins all round, the 1 cent value tied by the Oxford despatch datestamp. The cover is endorsed “By British Packet via England” and prepaid 37 cents for a non-applicable rate and credited “12” cents in red ink at right. The British mail packet rate was 33 cents, and despite the directive at the top, the cover was carried on the Inman Line with the American Packet datestamp in red on the reverse. Superb quality and one of the great imperforate covers to the Australian Colonies. Cert. Philatelic Foundation (2019). Route: Departed Oxford 20 July 1857 by rail to New York. Inman Line: Departed New York (23 July) per “City of Washington” to Liverpool (5 Aug); by rail via London (6 Aug) to Southampton. The European and Australian Royal Mail Co: Departed Southampton (12 Aug) per “Etna” via Malta (22 Aug) to Alexandria (25 Aug); overland to Suez; “European” 27.8 via Galle 12.9 to Melbourne 13.10; redirected to Mount Korong 18 Oct 1857 (90 days). Note: The addressee James W. Messler was a successful gold buyer in partnership with Joshua Grey. A contemporary account of his activities reads: “During the time I was partners with Messler and some years after he left, I usually bought from 100 to 150 ounces of gold per week. The gold bought at Wedderburn (14 kms from Mount Korong whence the cover was redirected) had to be taken either to Sandhurst Maryborough or Ballarat for sale. The profit on the gold was from 2 s. to 3 s. per ounce but the risk to life and property was very great and I have very little doubt but I would have been nobbled and in all probability killed had it not been generally known that I always went armed and that I was not likely to part with life or treasure without a struggle.” There are around ten imperforate covers recorded with the 1851-56 United States imperforate issue to the Australian Colonies with this being by far the finest. Three are franked at the 37 cents rate. Provenance: Collection Michaels, Haas, Grunin, Ishikawa, Hackmey, Gross, Eubanks. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4)

Blackjack, 10 c. green pair, small perf. faults at base and 24 c. brown-lilac each cancelled by circular grid handstamps and prepaying 46 cents for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter via Marseilles to Victoria. Manuscript “24” (cents) credit to England for forwarding. Some minor cover repairs on the flap on reverse, otherwise a scarce and attractive franking. Route - Departed Rushville, Indiana 18 July 864 overland and by rail to Quebec. Allan Line: Departed Quebec, Canada (23 July) to Liverpool (2 Aug); by rail via London (3 Aug) to Southampton. P&O Line: Departed Southampton (20 Aug) per “Delta” via Malta (29 Aug) to Alexandria (2 Sept); overland to Suez; “Bengal” (4 Sept) to Galle (19 Sept); “Madras” via King Georges Sound (7 Oct) to Melbourne (13 Oct), by rail to Bendigo, arriving 15 Oct 1864 (89 days). 3385 cover imageIncoming Mail Via Cape Horn 1857 (3 April): Large part cover from Fayetteville, Vermont, USA to Melbourne, Victoria, redirected to Beechworth on arrival bearing 1851 USA 3 c. dull red (Scott 11), an imperforate vertical pair, four good margins but clipped at top left with small portion replaced, cancelled by the Fayetteville datestamp in black. Prepayment of 6 cents comprising 5 cents for a private ship letter plus 1 cent Ship Captain’s fee. The letter carrier attempted to deliver the letter in Melbourne, but the addressee had relocated to the Beechworth gold diggings. An early example of the oval “L.C./AU 6/1857” handstamp in red at base indicates the letter was returned to the G.P.O. Melbourne for redirection to Beechworth. A rare 1851 imperforate issue usage to the Australian Colonies with no more than a dozen covers recorded, two from this correspondence. Route: Departed Fayetteville 3 April 1857 overland to Boston. Private sailing ship: Departed Boston 24 April 1857 per “Hollander” via Cape Horn to Melbourne (6 July); redirected to Beechworth 9 Aug 1857 (94 days to Melbourne).
