1754 cover imageMattern and Griffin Round the World Flight 1932 (5 July): Cover franked with 5c U.S. (New York July 5), 4pfg. Germany (July 7) and 15k Russia (cancelled Minsk 7.7), addressed to Clarence E. Page and autographed by both pilots, some usual minor flaws and toning, of no consequence.The U.S. pilot Jimmy Mattern, together with Lt. Griffin, took off from Floyd Bennet Field in an attempt to beat the round-the-world record held by Post and Gatty. The fliers landed in Berlin after a trip of 31 hours and 41 minutes from New York, via Harbor Grace. They later reached Moscow, but cracked up on their hop to Siberia. 1755 cover imageAttempted Round the World Solo Flight by Jimmy Mattern 1933 (June 3): Cover franked with 8c. for domestic air mail, cancelled at departure "New York June 3", backstamped in Jomfruland (June 4), Moscow (June 5), Omsk (June 6), Belovo (June 8), Krasnoiarsk (June 9), Khabarovsk (June 12), Anadyr (July 5), Nome (July 21), Fairbanks ( July 23), Juneau (July 25) and Edmonton (July 27). The cover is signed by Jimmy Mattern, who attempted to circle the globe in record time. Leaving New York, he flew nonstop to Jomfruland, Norway. The next stop was Moscow, but he was lost near Anadyr, Siberia and no communication was received for two weeks. Jimmy was finally rescued by the famous Russian flyer Levanevsky and flew on his plane to Nome, Alaska. From there, Mattern secured another airplane and continued back to New York. He carried a few covers which have postmarks showing the history of the flight. Minor cover wear and tear. A very rare cover. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

1756 cover imageWiley Post Round the World Flight from US to the East 1933 (July 15): Legal sized cover franked with 8c Airmail stamp, addressed to J. P. V. Heinmuller c/o National Aeronaut Association in Washington D.C., with an additional 8c added on arrival (Aug. 3) to mark the arrival despite of fact that the real date of arrival was July 22nd. The cover is signed by Wiley Post and is one of only 5 covers carried. The American pilot in his plane "Winnie Mae" succeeded the first solo flight around the world in his Lockheed Vega 5B “Winnie Mae” airplane and became the first person to circumnavigate Earth twice. He flew solo around the world, a distance of 15,596 miles in seven days, breaking the, Speed record of 15,596 miles in 186h and 49.5’ (115h and 36.5’ in the air). The record was unsurpassed for the next 5 years. The route was: New York - Berlin - Moscow - Irkutsk - Rukhlova Khabarovsk - Flat, Alaska (where he was forced down) - Fairbanks - Edmonton - New York. Jul 15" machine cancel, Signed by both pilots and backstamped on arrival by "KAUANAS18.VII.33" on reverse. 1761 cover image1934 (Dec. 19): Amelia Earhart envelope No. 5/50 of her Trans-Atlantic Solo Record Flight Newfoundland to Ireland 1932 (May 20/21), franked with Air Mail 5 c. tied by New York Grand Central duplex cancellation May 13, violet special cachet, additionally franked on arrival with GB 1½ d. with Londonderry cancellation (May 23), signed by the Avaitrix at lower left. A fine and rare cover. Cert. Philatelic Foundation (1994) Amelia Earhart Putnam became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic in her Lockeed Vega 5B and the first pilot to repeat the feat, landing her plane in a pasture at Culmore near Londonderry, Ireland, after she contended with strong northerly winds, icy conditions and mechanical problems. Earhart took off from Harbor Grace, Newfoundland on May 20th at 3:51 P.M., after 14h 54’ she landed in Ireland and continued the flight to London, arriving May 22nd. 1763 cover imageU.S. Navy First 24 Hour Massed Flight by Patrol Squadron Six-F 1936 (Dec. 18/19): Special printed envelope franked with 3c. tied by "San Diego Naval AIR Station" carried in plane 6-P-6, signed by the pilot and additionally franked on board of 'VT SQUADRON DEC 19 AM" to Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The first 24-hour mass test flight by US Navy planes on a "shake down" cruise for contemplated transpacific flight was made by Patrol Squadron 6F, consisting of twelve planes. 1767 cover imageFirst US Navy Massed Flight San Diego - Pearl Harbor 1937 (Jan.27): Pilot signed envelope franked with 3c. strip of four tied by "AIRCRAFT BASE FORCE U.S. FLEET to Honolulu, backstamped by "Jan. 29 P. Harbour' duplex together with a second envelope signed by the Squadron Commander carried also on Navy flight to Honolulu (Jan 28 1937) and cancelled on arrival "Pearl Harbour Jan 29 1937" and sent back to California. Twelve airplanes of the US Navy Squadron 6 made the first flight from San Diego to Hawaii. Lieut.-Comdr. Wm. M. Howard Hughes made stops at Paris, Omsk, Yakutsk, Fairbanks, Minneapolis and returned to New York. After the flight, a special cachet, showing the route, was applied.
