109 cover image1850/1904: Accumulation of 12 covers franked with USA postage used in Panama or mail sent via Panama forwarded to USA. Comprises 5 examples franked with US single frankings including two covers both franked with 1861-62 10 c. green, one of which contains an extensive letter from a man working in Frijole (Colon) writing back to his wife explaining the difficult circumstances for both labour and the climatic conditions. Also two USA postal stationery envelopes including a 5 c. blue sent from Colon to Ecuador and a 1 c. blue-green sent from New York to El Salvador via Panama. There is also an 1885 civil war stampless cover sent from Panama to San Francisco. Condition does vary although a scarce and interesting group. Ex the Brian Moorhouse estate. 1741 cover imageUS Navy San Francisco-Hawaii Nonstop Flight, 1925 (August 1): Envelope with magenta and purple cachets franked with 2c Red to Honolulu, tied by San Diego Aug. 22 duplex, fresh and fine. Two US Navy planes PN9-1 under Commander John Rodgers U.S.N. and PN9-3 under Commander Lieutenant Allan P. Snody, U.S.N. took off on August 31st at 3.P.M. for a non stop flight from San Francisco to Hawaii, but they were forced down at different distances on the route. Bartlett of US Navy attempted Non-Stop Flight in a PN-10 flying boat 1926 (Nov. 23): Cover franked with arimail 10c. with special cachet: 'Naval' Air Station Hampton Roads VA. to Panama-Canal Zone /First Non-Stop Flight" in magenta backstamped "Cristobal Nov. 26 C.Z. dublex on reverse. Some edge wear, otherwise fine AAMC TO1044. Additional Notes:As for any contract route although a 15c rate was in force between September 15th 1926 and January 31st ,1927 for routes over 1,000 miles.Broken oil feed line forced the aviator landing near Pines Island, Cuba, 600 miles from destination; after repairs, he proceeded to Cristobal, arriving November 26th. 1745 cover image"Yellow Bird" first flight from Old Orchard to France 1929 (June 13): Cover franked with Valley Forge 2c. carmine rose, addressed to Paris and stamped at "Comillas 14. Jun 28". The French plane "Yellow Bird" (L'Oiseau Canari) set records for the longest flight over the ocean and the first French flight over the North Atlantic. The plane flew 2,410 miles in 22 hours. The pilot, Lt. Rene Lefebvre, navigator, Sgt. Jean Assolant, and backer, Armeno Lotti attempted to fly non-stop from US to France. While en route, the crew discovered they have an uninvited passenger, one Arthur Schreiber, hidden aboard before the departure from Old Orchard in Maine. Because of extra weight and bad weather they ran out of fuel and were forced down at Comillas Spain. (Image 1) (Image 2)

1746 cover image'Pathfinder' Flight USA-Spain-Italy-France-London 1929 (July 10./17.): Group of four envelopes, incl. unfranked official cover from the Office of the Mayor in Los Angeles addressed to the Mayor of Rome bearing Yancey’s autograph in pencil (Longhi 1938), cover of Roma – Venezia special flight to celebrate the arrival of “Pathfinder” (Longhi 1940), Rome – Paris return flight of which only 10 covers carried (Longhi 1952) as well as official Rome – London flight cover addressed to Comandante Bitossi, Italian Air Attache of the Italian Embassy in London (Longhi 1951). An extremely rare set Longhi = € 4'700 Roger Q. Williams and Capt. Lewis A. Yancey. Attempted a flight from Old Orchard to Rome in the Bellanca-J monoplane “Pathfinder”, which took off July 8th. Due to engine problems, they were forced down near Santander in Spain. After repairs, they continued the flight to Rome where they landed 72 hours after their departure.
