6 cover image1885 10 c. Blue Issue 1885: 10 c. blue, First Day Cover, additionally franked with 2 c. red brown, tied by New York (Oct 1) duplex, addressed to Master Louis D. Hopkins, Catskill N.Y., reverse with "Catskill, N.Y. Recd 7 PM" (Oct 1) arrival backstamp, with newspaper clipping from the Catskill Recorder affixed to cover, reading "The special delivery system went into operation at the Catskill post office yesterday with Charles Everest as messenger. Last evening the first letter with the special stamp was received. It was addressed to Louis D. Hopkins, son of Hon. S.T. Hopkins. Messenger Everest made lively time in delivering the letter.", endorsed below "Mail Oct 2/85", additional note affixed at left reading "....the first letter received at he Catskill office under the new special delivery was for Master Lewis D. Hopkins...", some staining, both cover and stamp torn at upper left, but a great rarity, one of the highlights of this exhibit, and a key piece in the history of the Special Delivery service. Blue Issue 1885: 10 c. blue, group of seven items, with 1885 (Nov. 4) cover from New York to Cold Spring, failing to obtain Special Delivery sevice as Cold Spring was not yet one of the authorized Special Delivery offices available during the first year of service; 1886 (June) cover from Buffalo to Corning, New York; 1889 (Feb 26) usage on 2c stationey cover, Hopkinsville to Lunenburg, Massachusetts, forwarded to Fitchburg; unusual 1887 (Dec 22) usage on 1c postal stationery card, undeliverable due to closed office; scarce 1892 (Jul 8) usage on 2c letter card from Stockton to Downs, Kansas, one of only five recorded examples in private hands; and two late 1901 usages, one on Post Office Department / Official Mail cover, the other from Manchester, Wisconsin to Chicago, some small faults in places, but a chiefly fine and desirable group. Special Delivery, the latter cancelled in manuscript, endorsed "Postmaster please forward at once," and sent to the Palace Hotel in San Francisco, reverse with additional Oroville and Special Delivery / San Francisco time-clock (Sep 11) backstamps, struck on front with San Francisco duplex (Sep 14), endorsed "No forwarding address" and returned to Oroville, the 1885 10 c. with some surface rubbing, else a very fine and striking cover, the sole recorded mixed franking of the first two Special Delivery issues. Blue Issue 1888: 10 c. blue postal history group, with eight items, two being foreign destinations, the first an 1895 (Mar 19) registered four-colour franking cover from Nashville to Canada, the second affixed to an 1890 incoming cover from Germany to Boston, redirected and forwarded via special delivery, ex Markovits and the only such recorded usage; postal stationery with 10 c. blue, affixed to 1 c. postal card, sent from Pittsburgh to Allegeny (17 May, 1892), delivered an hour and a half after posting, after having covered a distance of 92 miles, and scarce usage on 1892 (Jun 24) letter sheet from San Francisco to Stockton (some light toning), ex Gobie and one of only seven such recorded examples; two 1890/92 hotel covers with clock receiving marks of Boston or San Francisco; and two usages of the 10 c. blue after the re-printing of January 1894, one a local usage in Massachusetts, the other sent from Roxbury to Boston, an important group, overall fine-very fine.
