3269 cover imageIncoming Mail Overland via Brindisi & Suez 1887 (May 25): Cover from Zahle, Ottoman P.O. in Lebanon to Malta, redirected to Sydney, New South Wales bearing Turkey 1884 1 pi. blue (Mi. 47) cancelled by a light "Zahle" datestamp (Coles & Walker fig. 206) and prepaying 1 piastre for a ½ ounce ship letter to Malta. The cover is addressed to a Mr. Bellamy, a passenger on the S.S. “Massillia”, c/o P&O at Malta. The “Massilia” had already left Malta where the boxed “T” handstamp was applied and endorsed “Via Suez per first P&O steamer” at top for the redirection to Sydney, where the manuscript “11d” in black applied. Multiple transit datestamps on the reverse. Rare usage from Zahle in Eastern Lebanon and one of the rarest origin/destination covers to the Australian Colonies. Route: Departed Lebanon 25 May 1887 via Syracuse, Italy (5 June) to Malta (13 June); by steamer to Alexandria. P&O Line: Departed Alexandria (17 June) per “Ganges” via Suez Canal and Aden (21 June) to Colombo (28 June); “Massillia” (28 June) via King Georges Sound (11 July) to Adelaide (13 July); by rail via Melbourne (19 July) to Sydney, arriving 21 July 1887 (57 days). 3277 cover imageIncoming Mail Overland via Brindisi & Suez 1896 (7 January): 1 piastre postal stationery letter card from Beirut, Turkish Post Offices in Lebanon to Melbourne, Victoria cancelled by a light Beirut datestamp and prepaying 1 piastre for a letter card to Victoria. Five transit datestamps on the reverse and remarkably retaining the outer borders. Rare, being only the second recorded cover from the Turkish Post Offices in Lebanon to the Australian Colonies before Federation in 1900. Route: Departed Lebanon 7 Jan 1896 by steamer to Alexandria. P&O Line: Departed Alexandria (10 Jan) per “Ballaarat” via Suez Canal (11 Jan), Aden (21 Jan), Colombo (28 Jan) to Adelaide (12 Feb); by rail via Melbourne 13.2 to Richmond, arriving 13 Feb 1896 (37 days). Gibbs Commission and Sail Merchant Turks Islands", "New York/Due 5 cts" c.d.s. in black, arrival datestamps in blue on reverse 15 May 1873, the four stamp has the "Throat Flaw" on neck, slight soiling, however a rare and impressive franking. 2251 image1851 (April): Four-colour franking of 1 cr. carminio chiaro su grigio, 2 cr. azzuro chiaro su grigio, 6 cr. azzuro scuro su azzuro and 9 cr. viola bruno scurissimo su azzuro, four fine and fresh with for this narrowly printed issue large margins incl. parts of three neighbouring adhesives in deep vivid colour, a most appealing franking, tied by mute 'a 5 sbarre' obliterator to front of letter with LIVORNO despatch datestamp (April 1, 1853) alongside, directed to Malta.
