10070 cover imageVerticais 1850: 20 r. black on greyish thin paper, a horizontal strip of three, margins shaved to large, used in combination with 1866 Dom Pedro 500 r. orange on 1866 double rate cover from Rio de Janeiro to Domfront, France, all tied by segmented star obliterators in black. Rio de Janeiro despatch cds below (Sept 19) with framed "PD" in red with Bordeaux entry marking in red alongside (Oct 18). A charming and rare cover - just three covers are recorded with a strip of three of the 20 reis, this being the sole example with a mixed issue franking. Probably the largest multiple now extant, a splendid and extremely rare multiple. 10076 bof imageVerticais 1850: 60 r. black on yellowish thin paper, the famous used block of eighty (10 x 8) with just clear to large margins on all sides, some typical light thins and creases, cancelled both in manuscript and by framed "RIO BONITO" handstamps in brown (Ayres fig. 1431), the handstamps having affected the paper in places however, this is the largest used multiple recorded and in exceptional quality for such a multiple. 10085 */bof imageVerticais 1850: 180 r. black on greyish thin paper, an unused block of six (2 x 3), of fine rich colour with some evidence of re-entries to second and fourth stamps on the numerals and small closed tear at top of second stamp, unused with small patches of original gum. Unused multiples of this stamp are rare (no examples in Pracchia or Ferreira, just a block of four in the Angelo Lima sale). A very attractive and most unusual large multiple Scott = $ 690+. Obverse with "CORREIO DA BAHIA / BRAZIL" cds (Aug 11) and red "PD", Calais entry marking in red at right (Sept 4). Opening tear affects one 10 reis adhesive but a colourful and unusual mixed issue double rate franking. (Image 1)

10089 bof imageVerticais 1850: 300 r. black on greyish thin paper, a used block of six (3 x 2) with good to very large margins all round in a deep shade, ironed out diagonal crease and sixth stamp with pinhole, cancelled by segmented cork handstamps in black. An enormously rare stamp in a large multiple (no larger used multiples noted in Burrus, Hubbard, Pracchia, Lima or Ferreira collections) and believed to be the second largest block known. Cert.
