Verticais 1850: 300 r. black on greyish thin paper, used in combination with 20 r. black and 60 r. black, margins just shaved to mostly large, on double rate 21 May 1864 cover to Montevideo endorsed per the French steamer "Saintonge", all three stamps lightly tied on despatch by Rio de Janeiro "Correio Geral da Corte" cds's with framed "P.P." in red adjacent. Internal docketing of receipt (May 27). Minor wrinkles of no significance, a most unusual franking for the double rate. The adhesives tied by segmented cork cancellations in black, pre-paying the double rate of 640 reis. French type 'Rio De Janeiro' cds of despatch at base (Jan 6) and reverse with 'P. Small piece of cover missing from the reverse, but an exceptional single usage of this stamp on letter with just two examples recorded, the other, ex Koester, June 1985, lot 2170 is altogether less attractive with the addressee's name inked out. Verticals 1850: 600 r. black on greyish thin paper, 300 r. deep black and 60 r. black on 1862 cover from Rio de Janeiro to Buenos Aires, Argentina at quintuple rate (overpaid 10 reis), carried by French steamer and endorsed per "Saintonge", the adhesives with mostly large margins, the 60 r. with closed tear at base, with each tied by Rio roller of dots and by "Correio Geral da Corte" cds (Nov 24). Obverse with further Rio dispatch cds's and framed "P.P." in red. Steamer Navarre" and addressed to Thomas W. Evans, MD, Physician to His Majesty Emperor Napoleon III in Paris, franked at seven times rate with "Correio Geral da Corte" cds at left in black and framed "P.D." in red. 'Brésil / Bordeaux' entry marking on obverse (Feb 18) in red. Illustrated in Edition D'Or XXXVII on the front cover and in Edition D'Or 59 on page 70.
