10015 cover image1843 (Aug 1): 60 r. black, fine impression, a four margined example in a deep shade, used as seal on reverse of March 1845 cover from Vassouras to Sorocaba via Rio de Janeiro; cancelled by bold strike of framed "VA. 10019 cover image1843 (Aug 1): 60 r. black, fine impression, a used example with large even margins all round, applied as seal on reverse of 1 July 1844 entire letter from Areias to Rio de Janeiro, tied by bold strike of framed "VA DE AREIAS" handstamp (Ayres fig. 1523) in brown, somewhat lighter on the adhesive possibly due to absorbence from the gum; and vertically creased due to placement. Illustrated in "Bull's Eyes on Covers" by Bernd Juchert on page 57. The entire in otherwise outstanding condition and of great rarity, the sole known cover from this town - and the first time this item has been offered in a proper auction. (Image 1)

10021 cover image1843 (Aug 1): 60 r. black, intermediate impression with a minimal loss of shading in oval, a used sheet corner marginal example with large margins all round and showing marginal lines at both left and at base, used on reverse of 28 April 1844 entire letter from Montes Claros de Formigas to Rio de Janeiro, Tixeira correspondence, tied by oval framed "V. DE FORMIGAS" handstamp over-inked in brownish-black. The adhesive with vertical file fold and somewhat stained, the cover with minor acid ink faults, but one of just two Bull's Eye covers from Montes Claros de Formigas (the other was ex the Dr. Goeggel collection, Corinphila sale 183, lot 3357). Illustrated in "Bull's Eyes on Cover" by Bernd Juchert on page 187. Rare. Note: This entire letter proves that the Villa de Formigas postmark was supplied to Villa de Montes Claros Formigas, North of Minas Gerais and not to Villa de Formigas, Southwest of Minas Gerais, as previously believed. 10027 bof image1843 (Aug 1): 90 reis black, early fine impression, the superb block of nine from the Second Composite Plate, State C, positions 1-3 / 7-9 / 13-15, being the left half on the pane of eighteen; of excellent colour and with large even margins all round. Vertical fold of trivial importance in a truly delightful multiple, cancelled by "CORREIO GERAL DA CORTE" circular datestamps (December 20, 1844). Illustrated in Bernd Juchert "Ochsenaugen im Viererblock", item 161 on page 68 and illustrated by Brookman on page 17 described as "A perfection used block of nine..." An important multiple in sublime condition. A rarity. Provenance: Collection Saul Newbury; Dr. Norman Hubbard, R.A. Siegel, New York, 25 May 1986, lot 2104, purchased by W.E. 10028 cover image1843 (Aug 1): 90 r. black, fine impression, a used example with large margins all round and showing sheet margin at base, on reverse of 28 February 1847 entire letter from ARROZAL to Jacarehy, cancelled on despatch by manuscript pen crosses, and in transit in Rio de Janeiro by "CORREIO GERAL DA CORTE" circular datestamp (March 7) in black. The adhesive with surface rubbing and otherwise minor imperfections; the entire being internally answered but presumably the reply was sent as an enclosure as there are no signs of further sending through the Mails. Some faults to the letter-sheet but a remarkable usage, from the same correspondence as the manuscript cancelled cover from Arrozal sold by Corinphila in March 1984. Just three single frankings of the 90 reis are recorded on cover. Signed Sismondo. Cert. Sismondo (2002) Scott = $ 37'500. (Image 1) (Image 2)
