3302 cover imageIncoming Mail Overland via Naples 1894 (July 6): Registered cover from St. Helena to Sydney, New South Wales bearing 1887 St. Helena 2½ d. on 6 d. grey, a strip of six cancelled by the St. Helena datestamp and prepaying 1 s. 3 d. comprising 1 s. for a 1 ounce ship letter plus 3 d. registration. Registered handstamps for St. Helena in red and London in black on obverse and three strikes of oval “POST OFFICE / ♚ / St. Helena” handstamp in purple on reverse. Despite some flap repairs on the reverse, a very fine and rare cover, with just a few covers recorded from St. Helena to the Australian Colonies. Route: Departed St. Helena 6 July 1894 by steamer to London (2 Aug); by rail to Naples. Orient Line: Departed Naples (6 Aug) per “Orotava” via Suez Canal, Albany (31 Aug) to Adelaide (4 Sept); by rail via Melbourne to Sydney, arriving 6 Sept 1894 (62 days). (Image 1) (Image 2)
