3092 cover imageIncoming Mail Overland via Southampton 1858 (Sept 13): Cover, with contents, from Basseterre, St. Christopher to Morpeth, New South Wales, redirected to Newcastle and Ipswich, Moreton Bay District (Queensland) bearing 1855 Great Britain 1 d. red-brown, perf. 14, 1855-57 4 d. rose and 6 d. lilac, with each boldly cancelled by the “A12” obliterator of Basseterre in black. The cover is prepaid 11 d. and underpaid 1 d. for a for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter of 1 s. to New South Wales. Manuscript ‘2” (d) in black for the redirection to Ipswich, Moreton Bay District. On the reverse are transit datestamps for St. Kitts, London, Sydney, Newcastle and Ipswich. Docketed on the reverse as arriving by the “European”. Very fine and an outstanding rarity of Great Britain adhesives used abroad. Cert. BPA (1970). Route - Private sailing ship: Departed Basseterre 13 Sept 1858 to Porto Rico. Royal Mail Steam Packet Co: Departed Porto Rico (14 Sept) per “Solent” to St. Thomas (15 Sept); “Magdalena” (15 Sept) to Southampton (2 Oct); by rail via London back to Southampton. The European and Australian Royal Mail Co: Departed Southampton (12 Oct) per “Teviot” via Malta (23 Oct) to Alexandria 26.10; overland to Suez; “European” (29 Oct) via Galle (17 Nov) and Melbourne (11 Dec) to Sydney, overland to Morpeth (16 Dec), redirected via Newcastle (17 Dec) and Sydney (18 Dec) to Ipswich, arriving 27 Dec 1858 (110 days). Note: The only cover recorded to or from Saint Christopher to the Australian Colonies and considered by Dr. Geoff Kellow RDP as one of the Top 10 inwards covers to the Australian Colonies. Oval framed 'ST. HELENA' despatch (March 13) in blue and London transit (April 7). Struck in London with framed "GB 2F" accountancy handstamp in black and straight line "INSUFFICIENTLY PAID" in black. The cover was fully paid for under ¼ ounce, so found to be overweight in London and taxed '10' décimes due on arrival. Rounded corner to envelope at lower right but a very rare cover.
