Via Pacific Ocean & San Francisco 1889 (Feb 18): Registered cover from Adelaide, South Australia to Hoboken, USA endorsed “Per Frisco Mail” bearing 1882 South Australia 4 d. deep mauve and 1887 6 d. pale blue cancelled by the Registered Adelaide datestamp and prepaying 10 d. comprising 6 d. for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to the United States and 4 d. registration. Curved “REGISTERED’ handstamp in black at left and “U.S.CHARGE / TO COLLECT / 5CENTS” applied in San Francisco for 5 cents transit postage due from a non-Treaty country and a 5 cent Postage Due applied confirming payment by the recipient. Fine and scarce. Route: Departed Adelaide 18 Feb 1889 by rail via Melbourne to Sydney. Union Steamship Co: Departed Sydney (20 Feb) per “Zealandia” via Auckland (25 Feb) to San Francisco (16 March); by rail via Chicago to New York.
