Adelaide datestamp and prepaying 7 d. for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to Italy. Imprint at the top left for “Henry Ketten” promoting his musical tour. Multiple datestamps on the reverse, including Bologna arrival (26 Oct). Opening tear at top and slight age spot but scarce, one of the earliest covers recorded from South Australia to Italy. Route - P&O Line: Departed Adelaide 17 Sept 1880 per “Bangalore” to Galle; “Khiva” (5 Oct) via Suez Canal (18 Oct) to Alexandria; “Ceylon” (22 Oct) to Brindisi (25 Oct); by rail from Brindisi to Bologna, arriving 26 Oct 1880 (39 days). Note: A musical child prodigy, Henry Ketten was born in Hungary in 1848 and was admitted to the Paris Conservatoire at the age of seven and a half. As a pianist, he travelled widely around Europe, playing for royalty before a tour of the United States in 1879. He toured Australia the following year, probably the best pianist to tour the Colonies up to that date. He became sick whilst touring Russia and returned to Paris where he died at the age of 35. Note: Only six examples of the 1 s. yellow are recorded on cover, with this being the second earliest cover recorded from South Australia to India. It is widely acknowledged that this is the finest and most important cover from the Australian Colonies to India. Note: There were no published rates from the Australian Colonies to India until 1865.
