3038 cover imageOverland via Southampton 1858 (July 10): Cover from Adelaide, South Australia to Shrewsbury, England bearing 1858 South Australia 1 s. orange, imperforate with three ample margins and touched at right, neatly cancelled by the Adelaide datestamp in blue leaving the Queen’s profile clear and prepaying 1 s. for a double rate 1 ounce ship letter to England. Some minor cover blemishes mostly confined to the reverse. A rarity on cover (there are four complete and two part covers recorded bearing the South Australian 1 s. imperforate issue). Many of the great South Australian collections including Napier, Frenkle, Beresford etc. did not posses an example on letter, the adhesive used just three weeks after the date of issue. Route - McMeckan, Blackwood & Co: Departed Adelaide 10 July 1858 per “Havilah” to Melbourne. The European and Australian Royal Mail Co: Departed Melbourne 11 July 1858 per “Emeu” via Galle (7 Aug) to Suez (24 Aug); overland to Alexandria. Cunard Line: “Teviot” via Malta (30 Aug) to Southampton (9 Sept); by rail via Shrewsbury, arriving in Wem on 11 Sept 1858 (72 days). Note: Given the small size of this envelope, it was probably intended to be sent via Marseilles for as a ½ ounce ship letter. With no specific route endorsement, the letter was sent via Southampton. 3068 cover imageOverland via Southampton 1864 (Sept 26): Cover from Adelaide, South Australia to Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA bearing South Australia 1864 rouletted 2 d. bright vermillion, 6 d. greenish blue and 6 d. dull ultramarine (corner faults) cancelled by Adelaide datestamp and prepaying 1 s. 2 d. for a ½ ounce ship letter to the United States. Postal markings include “8” (pence) manuscript in red credit to the USA and re-rated to “16 CENTS” with handstamp in red for Transatlantic shipment via an American packet. “CHICAGO Am. PKT/ 5” denoting 5 cents inland postage to be paid by the recipient and further rerated with Depreciated Currency “11 / US NOTES” at Chicago if the addressee was paying in United States of America banknotes instead of coins. A fine and unique cover. Note: During the American Civil War from 1861-1865, inflation caused banknote currency to rapidly devalue, and unpaid letters were being paid with these inflationary notes. In March 1863, the Postmaster General implemented a premium system if the recipients paid by banknotes instead of coins, leading to a period of what is called “fractional / depreciated currency”. For almost two years, dual rating handstamps were applied until May 1865. Detailed notes on United States Depreciated Currency are included with this lot. The only Depreciated Currency cover recorded on mail from the Australian Colonies. Route - Australasian Steam Navigation Co: Departed Adelaide 27 Sept 1864 per “Rangatira” to King George’s Sound.
