Originally written and posted on the 25 September and endorsed “Via Melbourne & Galle” for the P&O Line, it was too late to catch the steamers to Sydney and Melbourne in time for the P&O “Tanjore” to depart. Instead, it was posted via the contracted Torres Strait route. “TOO LATE” handstamp in black applied at Brisbane to represent the change of routes. Palmer records eighteen examples of the “TOO LATE” handstamp on Queensland Mail up to 1891, with this being one of the earlier examples. The handstamp on this cover is illustrated in “The Pre-UPU Mail of Queensland”on Page 10. A very fine and unusual cover. Due to an outbreak of cholera in Egypt in July 1883, the cover had three disinfection slits applied in Alexandria. Very fine and rare, an important disinfected cover. Route - The Eastern & Australian Mail Steamship Co: Departed Townsville 25 June 1883 per “Quetta” via Batavia (9 July) to Aden (25 July). P&O Line: Departed Aden (30 July) per “Nizam” (21 July) via Suez Canal (3 Aug) to Alexandria; “Mongolia” (7 Aug) to Venice (11 Aug); by rail from Venice to Mariager (over 44 days). Note: The outbreak of cholera in Egypt in July 1883 closed the mails via Brindisi. A new route via Venice was proposed, and the mails to Europe were diverted through there until early December. Disinfection of the mail was performed at Alexandria. However, letters addressed to England and France avoided the disinfection process. The only disinfected cover recorded from Queensland processed at Venice due to the third cholera pandemic in Egypt in 1883 and one of the earliest covers recorded from Queensland to Denmark. Usage of the 2 d. stationery card could only be prepaid to England. Multiple transit datestamps on obverse including London, Calais rail via Paris, overland via Constantine to St. Charles. Very colourful and a rarity. The only Pre-UPU cover recorded from the Australian Colonies to Algeria.
