3081 cover imageOverland via Southampton 1871 (Jan 24): Tiny registered cover from Bowen, Queensland to London bearing 1867 Queensland Chalon 1 s. grey horizontal pair and Registered 6 d. orange-yellow with pre-printing vertical paper fold, cancelled by an indistinct rays numeral “63”, and registered 6 d. adhesive cancelled by manuscript “111” representing the Bowen registration number and prepaying 2 s. 6 d. comprising 2 s. for a quadruple ship letter plus 6 d. for registration. “REGISTERED / BOWEN” handstamp in red at lower left and two strikes of the London registered datestamp in red, one ties the 1 s. pair. A filing crease at the centre does not affect the adhesives. A highly attractive and a well documented registered cover. Route - Australian Steam Navigation Co: Departed Bowen 24 Jan 1871 per “Black Swan” to Brisbane (27 Jan). Private steamship: Departed Brisbane (30 Jan) per “Lady Young” to Sydney. P&O Line: Departed Sydney (25 Feb 1871) per “Avoca” to Galle (19 March); “Australia” (23 March) to Suez (7 April); overland to Alexandria; “Ceylon” (9 April) via Malta (12 April) to Southampton (21 April); by rail to London (87 days). Note: The prepayment of this cover does not correspond to any of the weight steps for mail to England. The rate per ½ ounce via Southampton was 6 d., however, given the size of the envelope, it would appear that it would not have weighed as much as 2 ounces without a weighty enclosure. The rate via Marseilles was 10 d., and even at a double weight of 1 ounce would make this letter overpaid by 4 d. Since there was no late fee of 6 d., and no endorsement for the preferred route, this highly paid registered envelope was sent by the slowest route via Southampton. Illustrated in “Queensland Postal Rates and Charges 1832-1913” by Campbell on page 33 and listed in Palmer census on page 200. Provenance: Collection Campbell, Manning. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)
