3443 cover imageVia Tasman Sea & Pacific Ocean 1871 (March 19): Cover from Leyburn, Queensland to Port Moreton, Fiji bearing 1868 Queensland Chalon 2 d. pale blue, a horizontal strip of three with light rays cancel and prepaying 6 d. for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to Fiji. Some sealed cover tears at top, but one of the great destination rarities from Queensland and with the original letter enclosed. The only recorded cover from Queensland to Fiji. Note: This is an early cover to Fiji, posted before the issue of Fiji Times Express stamps, and hence there were no arrival datestamps at Fiji when this cover was mailed. There was no documented postal rate to Fiji until 1 January 1874. The enclosed letter was written by Sydney businessman Henry Beit (1826-1881) who was a land agent specialising in the sale of properties in outback New South Wales, Queensland and the Fiji Islands. His correspondent, Edward Sandilands (1847-1871) was a young English cotton grower in the Yasawa Islands, Fiji. It is believed that Sandilands was relying on Beit’s financial backing to make his Fiji enterprise a success. After the complete failure of his Port Moreton cotton plantation, Sandilands was appointed British Vice-Consul at Levuka. His life was tragically cut short when he drowned in a canoe accident in the Fiji Islands in 1871. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)
