3063 cover imageIntroduction of new Postal rates to the West Coast of the United States of America Up to 1857. Postal items addressed to the West coast of the United States were sent via the Pacific Ocean. After the conclusion of the Crimean War in 1856, England reviewed its trading and postal routes. In February 1857, a new rate to the West coast of the United States was introduced via England for New South Wales, Queensland, and Victoria. It was available at 1 s. 8½ d. via Southampton, necessarily overpaid to 1 s. 9 d. since there were no ½ d. stamps available. It was calculated by adding the 6 d. Empire rate to the 1 s. 2½ d. paid to destination rate from England to the West coast of the United States. Overland via Southampton 1863 (June 1): Cover from Maryborough, Queensland to San Francisco, USA bearing Queensland 1863 Chalon 1 d. orange-vermillion, 2 d. blue and 6 d. yellow-green, single and pair, neatly cancelled by rays numeral "96" obliterator and prepaying 1 s. 9 d. for a ½ ounce ship letter to the West coast of the United States via England. “1/1” (sterling) manuscript in red credit to England for forwarding to the United States. This credit to England conforms to the 1863 rate reduction from 1/9 d. to 1/7 d. In July 1863, the United States transcontinental rate was reduced from 10 c. to 3 c., thus lowering via England rates to the West coast. This cover was in transit in Galle when the new rates were introduced. Very fine and rare, a highly important cover from the Australian Colonies to the United States. To date, only four covers have been recorded from Australia to the West coast of the United States via this route. Two from Victoria (Lot 3039) and two from Queensland, both from this correspondence. Route - P&O Line: Departed Sydney 22 June 1863 per “Northam” to Galle (17 July); “Simla” (19 July) to Suez (6 Aug); overland to Alexandria; “Ripon” (7 Aug) via Malta (10 Aug) to Southampton (19 Aug); by rail via London 1to Liverpool. Inman Line: Departed Liverpool (20 Aug) per “City of London” to New York (31 Aug); by rail to St. Joseph, Missouri. Central Overland Co: Departed St. Joseph, Missouri to Salt Lake City, Nevada. Butterfield Co: Salt Lake City to Virginia City, Nevada. Pioneer Stage Co: Virginia City to Sacramento. River steamer to San Francisco, arriving 21 Sept 1863 (91 days). Note: The introduction of the new 1/9d. rate in February 1857 via England was expensive compared to the default transmission of mail to the west coast of the United States of America via the Pacific Ocean. Up to the beginning of 1859, th“96”e carriage of mail from the UK to San Francisco was transmitted via Panama. In early 1859, the route was reformed to an overland route using rail to St. Louis and by Butterfield stage coach to San Francisco. In 1861, due to the Civil War, the original route via the southern states was modified to the Central Overland Route, the carriage of this envelope from Queensland. For more information regarding the United States transportation of this cover, see “British Letter Mail to Overseas Destinations 1840 to UPU” by Jane & Michael Moubray, pages 359-360 of the second edition. This cover was part of an original find in the late 1990’s and described in detail in “Philately from Australia” in June 2003. Listed in Ben Palmer's census as the second earliest recorded cover from Queensland to the United States of America. Provenenace: Collection Forster. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

3069 cover imageOverland via Southampton 1866 (March 2): Registered cover from Banana, Queensland to Aalen, Kingdom of Wurtemberg bearing 1861 Queensland Chalon registered 6 d. orange-yellow, a used example with two further stamps missing at left, clearly cancelled by rays numeral “24” obliterator in black. Multiple postal markings including “1/-” and “1/3” manuscript in red representing the prepayment of postage and registration. “Recomandirt” boxed handstamp in red for registered mail processed through the Aachen exchange office and “26” (kroner) credit to Württemberg for forwarding a registered letter. Numerous transit datestamps on the front and reverse. Despite the missing stamps, a very attractive and well documented cover in Queensland philatelic literature. Illustrated in “The Pre-UPU Mail from Queensland” by Ben Palmer on page 143 and on page 73 in “Queensland Postal History” by Campbell. Just five pre-UPU covers are recorded from Queensland to the Kingdom of Württemberg. Route: Departed Banana 2 March 1866 overland to Brisbane (9 March). Australasian Steam Navigation Co: Departed Brisbane per “City of Brisbane” (9 March) to Sydney. P&O Line: Departed Sydney (24 March) per “Geelong” to Galle (16 April); “Simla” (18 April) to Suez (3 May); overland to Alexandria; “Tanjore” (5 May) to Southampton (19 May); by rail to London, by steamer to Ostend; by rail via Aachen (24 May) to Aalen, arriving 27 May 1867 (65 days). Note: From 1860 to 1866 the registration fee for mail to the United Kingdom was 6 d. From December 1866 the normal charge for registered letters to foreign destinations was double the usual postage rate plus the inland registration fee. Hence the 1 s. 3 d. registration charge to the Kingdom of Württemberg. Provenance: Collection Campbell, 'Chartwell'. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)
