488 cover image1902 (March): Tehran Typeset provisional 5 ch. red & buff imperforate, overprinted framed 'Provisioire' (Type I) in black, a fine used example (pos. 1) with large even margins, on 14 April 1902 cover from Kermanshah to Isfahan tied by CRMANCHAH cds (April 14) and by TEHERAN transit cds (April 22) in black with repeated information strikes of each at right. Just two covers are recorded with this issue used from Kermanshah. Rare and most attractive. Note 1: Whilst the Typeset issue is believed to have been produced in Teheran, the issue was printed as an emergency measure to alleviate stamp shortages, mainly in Meched and Tabriz. Only 5 covers are recorded used outside these two cities. Note 2: It is also interesting to note that the famous Robson Lowe sales of the 1980's of Khorshid and Brigadier Lewis collections, and the more recent Shaida, Keykavoussi, Eftekhar and Youssefi collections contained no examples of this issue used on letter. 495 cover image1902 (March): Rosette overprint in red on Typeset provisionals, 1st. printing, four examples of 1 ch. grey & buff imperforate (positions 1,2,3 and 11), single corner example of 5 ch. red & buff (pos. 12) and obverse with 12 ch. ultramarine & buff (pos. 8) all used on 1902 cover to the Governor of Kurdistan tied by RESCHT circular datestamps (March 25) in black. In transit in Teheran 1902 5 ch. on 10 ch. pale blue was applied to pay above the correct rate of 24 chahis and tied TEHERAN cds in black (March 29). An unusual cover - the earliest recorded usage of the Rosette handstamp issue. Note: Most catalogues, incl Stanley Gibbons list the issue from February 1902. There is no evidence the issue was released or used this early and the stamps were probably issued on, or just after, the Persian New Year on 21 March 1902. (Image 1) (Image 2)
