3179 cover imageIncoming Mail Overland via Marseilles 1864 (Aug 20): Cover from Rome to Echuca, Victoria bearing 1852 Papal States 2 baj. black on green pair with large margins all round and 8 baj. black in a strip of three, margins good to touched, cancelled by the diamond grid obliterator, prepaying 28 baj. for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to Victoria. Handstamped “P.P.” and “P.D.” in black and with transit datestamp of Marseilles in red and arrival of Echuca on the reverse. Very fine and attractive. Route - Departed Rome, Papal States 20 Aug 1864 by steamer to Marseilles (24 Aug). P&O Line: Departed Marseilles (28 Aug) per “Syria” via Malta (30 Aug) to Alexandria (3 Sept); overland to Suez; “Bengal” (4 Sept) to Galle (19 Sept); “Madras” (19 Sept) via King Georges Sound (7 Oct) to Melbourne (13 Oct); by rail to Echuca, arriving 14 Oct 1861 (55 days). Note: The rate of 28 bajocchi was introduced for each 7½ grams on the 1 Jan 1858, but only to the port of destination. However, this option was not available to covers originating in the Papal States to the Australian Colonies until 1 Sept 1866. In contrast, this letter demonstrates the possibility to pay the postage not only to the sea port, but also to an inland address. The sequential use of the “P.P.” and “P.D.” handstamps reflects the uncertainty of the postal clerks in Rome with regard to this fact. Whilst most of the Papal States covers to the Australian Colonies are from the Polding correspondence to New South Wales, covers to the other colonies are very rare. Only three covers are recorded to Victoria. This lot includes a review of the addressee Dr. Charles Strutt who was the Police Magistrate at Echuca in 1864. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)
