Endorsed “via London" (but not sent via that route) and with two different “P.P.” handstamps. Transit datestamps for Marseilles and arrival at Sydney. Very fine and rare, being one of the most attractive covers from this small correspondence. Route - By steamship: Departed Rome 1 April 1862 to Marseilles (4 April). P&O Line: Departed Marseilles (28 April) per “Vectis” via Malta (30 April) to Alexandria (4 May); overland to Suez; “Bengal” (5 May) to Galle (21 May); “Bombay” (22 May) via King Georges Sound (5 June) and Melbourne (10 June) to Sydney, arriving 13 June 1862 (74 days). Note: Although endorsed to be sent via London, as are most examples from this correspondence, the steamship leaving from Rome to Marseilles to catch the P&O steamer was regarded as the quickest route. This cover is addressed to John Polding, the first Catholic Archbishop in Australia. This correspondence was only recently discovered in 2000, where all fifteen examples of the 50 baj. on cover to the Australian Colonies derive from. (Image 1) (Image 2)
